Greeley Walks again challenging Greeley residents to go a Week Without Driving

Greeley Walks…For The Health Of It! looks to expand the reach of “Week Without Driving” in the organization’s second year of bringing the initiative to Greeley.

Sept. 29 to Oct. 5 is Week Without Driving, and Greeley Walks founder Jim Riesberg will host an introduction to the week Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 6:07 to 7:15 p.m. in Room 101C of the Greeley Recreation Center, 651 10th Ave.

Approximately one-third of people in the United States cannot drive due to age, ability, income and other factors, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Week Without Driving challenges residents to go a week as if they too are without a vehicle, in an attempt to see what those who can’t rely on a vehicle must go through to get around.

But Riesberg stresses that not being able to make it the full week without driving doesn’t mean it was a failure.

“We want to emphasize that it’s not pass or fail,” he said. “We don’t want people not to sign up because they don’t think they can do it.”

Last year, Riesberg extended the challenge to City Council. He said two members signed up: Tommy Butler and Deb Deboutez. On Tuesday, he will again present the challenge to the council.

And while the challenge remains the same, Riesberg is expanding on the foundation he set in year one.

“We’re kind of incorporating Public Works, the transit system and the Spin Program, the e-scooter and e-bike program,” Riesberg said. “We want people thinking, ‘What else could I do?’ And of course we’ll be talking about walking.”

Along with the introduction to the week, Riesberg is planning a pair of events on Wednesday, Oct. 1.

“We’re inviting City Council, then some other people and organizations that work with people in the city,” he said.

First, he plans to take the group on a short bus ride.

“I would guess there are some city council members that haven’t ridden the bus,” Riesberg said. “One of the things we wanted to do is try to find a way to get them on the bus, maybe for the first time.”

After that, he has scheduled them a tour of the Greeley-Evans Transit facility.

“You don’t realize how big it is and how many busses they have and everything it takes to operate a bus system,” Riesberg said.

Week Without Driving was first started in 2021 by Disability Mobility Initiative in Washington State. The event went national in 2023, when America Walks partnered with the organization and brought it to 41 states and Washington D.C. Last year, the first it was in Greeley, it grew to more than 520 groups in all 50 states and Washington D.C.
