Mike Tyson Reveals Shocking Fentanyl Use During His Boxing Career

Mike Tyson, 59, is making headlines following a recent podcast appearance in which he admitted to using fentanyl during his boxing career. Tyson, who became the youngest heavyweight champion of the world at age 20, was a guest on The Katie Miller Podcast. On the show, he came clean about his use of the potentially fatal drug to deal with pain and injury.

“It was a painkiller, and I used to use it to patch up my toe,” Tyson said on the podcast episode, which dropped Tuesday. “It was like heroin — once it wears off and you take the Band-Aid off, you start withdrawing, throwing up, just like if you were on heroin.”

He explained further, “It was illegal if it [was] caught in my bloodstream. It was a narcotic, my friend told me. It was brand new. I told my friend, ‘Could I use this?’ No one ever heard of it.”

While Tyson doesn’t claim to have become addicted to the powerful painkiller, he has been candid about his past battle with addiction, which involved cocaine, alcohol, and opioids.

Tyson first tried cocaine at the age of 11 and admits to becoming a “full-blown cokehead” during the height of his boxing career. Tyson has admitted to competing under the influence during many of his major fights during the ’90s and 2000s, including his June 2000 fight against Lou Savarese.

Tyson does not claim to be completely sober now but says he no longer uses drugs and alcohol.

    What Is Fentanyl?

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that can be legally prescribed for pain relief by a licensed professional. The highly addictive opioid is a Schedule II controlled substance, which means it has a high potential for abuse.

Due to its highly addictive nature, when abused fentanyl runs a high risk for overdose. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) projects that 48,422 people died last year as a result of illicitly consuming fentanyl.

    • Fentanyl is 100 times more potent than morphine• The drug is 50 times more potent than heroin

In the podcast interview, Tyson explains that the fear of getting caught with the narcotic in his system kept him from using it further.

When Does Mike Tyson Fight Next?

Mike Tyson and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, 48, announced in early September they’ll fight in an exhibition match in spring 2026.

Tyson also announced on the podcast he’ll bring back his one-man show, originally performed in 2013, The Undisputed Truth.
