That game sure felt personal for Dan Campbell, his staff, and his team. Unfortunately, instead of fighting back, much of the Bears’ roster just rolled over. A culture that was as rotten as it was for the Bears last season doesn’t get fixed overnight. But today showed there’s still a long way to go.
Let’s hand out some instant grades.
Offense
QB Caleb Williams | B
Caleb looked good today. Was he perfect? No. He made a dumb decision on the interception, but at the end of the day, he heaved up a deep shot on 2nd and 32. It was a bad choice, but let’s not act like it was the worst interception in the history of football. He looked calm in the pocket, delivered the ball on time better than he did last week, and is developing quite the chemistry with Rome Odunze. I thought this was a really nice response after a really tough home opener.
RB D’Andre Swift | D
The guy runs hard; he just can’t make the mistakes he made. The fumble was bad. The false start out of the locker room in the second half was bad. D’Andre Swift is at his best when he’s a complementary back, and this is what happens when you use him as a feature back.
WR DJ Moore | C
He was…fine. But he needs to be more than that.
WR Rome Odunze | B
I have a lot more good than bad to take away from Rome’s day. Two touchdowns, got open, caught the ball when thrown his way for the most part, but he also had passes hit his hands in the third quarter that ended up on the ground.

He made a couple of grabs, and he also appeared to go the wrong way on an important third down in the first half.
TE Colston Loveland | INC
Not sure if it’s a usage thing or what, but we didn’t really see him at all.
TE Cole Kmet | C
Surprisingly, Kmet has been featured in the pass game more than Loveland has. He’s looked fine. I’ve also liked his blocking in the run game.
Offensive Line | C-
They were fine today. It wasn’t the best performance, but it wasn’t terrible. The Darnell Wright sack wasn’t pretty, but I thought he was fine overall. The interior seemed to be better today as well, and Joe Thuney is very good. Braxton Jones still continues to struggle on that left side; he’s getting pushed back way too much in pass protection. It might be time to throw Theo Benedet in there and see what he can do.
Defense
Defensive Line | F
What is it that you do here?
Linebackers | D-
They weren’t as terrible as the other two units, but they weren’t good.
Secondary | F
Oh look, Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown each just caught another pass without a defender within five yards of them!
Special Teams
K Cairo Santos | C
Kicking it out of bounds on the opening kick was just hilariously fitting.
P Tory Taylor | C
He still has a really strong leg, but his inconsistency with hang time is very confusing. He didn’t have that issue in college; it’s just popped up now. Not a good look for Ryan Poles, whose mid-round draft picks over the past few years seem to be disappearing.
Bears Coaching
Ben Johnson | D
The penalties just have to stop. Players commit penalties, and they’re not all on him, but discipline ultimately falls on coaching. Having said that, I liked how the Bears’ offense looked today. Caleb looked prepared, more comfortable in the pocket, and played a good game. The game plan and play calling seemed to fit him well today.
I’ve been trying to give Ryan Poles the benefit of the doubt, but I’m really starting to lean toward the side that he’s a problem. It’s only Week 2, and this team should be given the year to start coming into their own and all that. Having said that, there is way too much quit in this team. Sometimes, when a culture is that rotten, it can’t be fixed. We’ll see if Ben Johnson can. But also, when two of your second-round picks and a third-round pick from last year are healthy scratches, that seems like a talent evaluation problem.
Dennis Allen | F
The first half against the Vikings might have been fool’s gold at home against a rookie QB making his debut. They didn’t come close to covering Amon-Ra St. Brown all day. I get he’s good, but still. The pass rush was non-existent. This isn’t all Dennis Allen’s fault, but even with the injuries to Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson, it feels like this unit underachieved massively today.
