A Look at Adam Brody and Leighton Meesters Relationship on Screen and Behind the Scenes

Adam Brody and wife Leighton Meester are a Hollywood power couple straight out of a millennial fever dream. He starred in The O.C. as lovable nerd Seth Cohen; she starred in Gossip Girl as ruthless Upper East Sider Blair Waldorf. Now they’re married with two kids.

“They are both like these millennial icons, and the idea that they somehow got together in real life and started a family I think kind of blew people’s minds,” Erin Foster, creator of Nobody Wants This, the Netflix rom-com that returned Brody, now 45, to his early-aughts heartthrob status, told Bustle. When the show returns for its second season on Oct. 23, 2025, Meester will join for a four-episode arc as a momfluencer.

“Almost everything we do, [the creators/producers are] like, ‘Would your husband or wife want to be in this as well?’” Brody said at the 2024 Golden Globes, before Meester’s casting on Nobody Wants This was announced. “So we get a lot of opportunity.”

“We have to resist more than we have to seek it out,” Meester added.

Although the television fan-favorites will be sharing the screen again soon (it’s not their first time), they’re a famously private couple. “She’s more inherently private than I am,” Brody told GQ in 2019. “I don’t seek publicity, but if I’m sitting next to you on the subway, I’ll tell you everything about me. We’re homebodies. We don’t go to a lot of things that perhaps we could and don’t seek out promotion in that way ... we’ve found this great balance so far that really works for us. We’re also not very active on social media.”

Still, there are plenty of Brody-Meester relationship details to pour over if you so choose, including how they met, when they exchanged vows and more. Let's dig in.

Adam Brody is married to fellow TV legend Leighton Meester. She’s best known for playing queen bee Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl, but her credits also include Country Strong, in which she showed off her singing chops, and the ABC sitcom Single Parents, which was canceled after two seasons. She currently stars in The CW’s Good Cop/Bad Cop, which has not yet been renewed yet for a second season (but there’s hope), and had an arc on the second season of the Apple TV+ series The Buccaneers. She’ll next be seen in a guest role on Nobody Wants This, which also reunites her with Gossip Girl (voice) star Kristen Bell.

Are Adam Brody and Leighton Meester still married?

The couple, who tied the knot on Feb. 15, 2014, is still together. Taking home the Critics Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 2024, Brody acknowledged Meester in true romantic fashion. “My darling, darling, darling wife,” he said. “Thank you for sharing this life with me and this journey with me. Thank you for our family. Love you with all my heart. Thank you so much.”

As if that wasn't swoon-worthy enough, Brody recently told Stylistthat if he were to walk into a room filled with everyone he’s ever met, his wife would be the first person he looked for.

“When you’re out somewhere in public, there’s something very nice about seeing the person you’re with from across the room talking to someone else,” he said. “It’s a totally different perspective and, ideally, it’s a very lovely and flattering one. In my case, it definitely is.”

Brody and Meester met through Josh Schwartz, creator of The O.C. and co-creator of Gossip Girl, at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles. Schwartz was technically introducing Brody to a bunch of the Gossip Girl actors — who were only just beginning their wild ride on the show at the time — but one cast-member in particular caught his eye. “I was smitten instantly,” Brody said on Podcrushed, a podcast hosted by Gossip Girl himself, Penn Badgely. “And I was smitten for a long time.”

Brody went on to explain that he didn’t get to know Meester for many years, despite working together “briefly” in the 2011 movie The Oranges, in part because she remained “elusive” and “aloof” for so long.

“I couldn't get a total read, because even though she professes to have been interested in me and all those things, not only did she not pursue that, she was perfectly willing to let that never happen, you know? … She was perfectly willing to let that message in the bottle return to sea.”

As Badgley put it, “That means she already had faith in your love.”

How long did Adam Brody and Leighton Meester date before marriage?

News of their relationship broke in February 2013 and they were married on Feb. 15, 2014, so they dated for about a year before exchanging vows. But they didn’t have a proper wedding. “On sets and in life, I’ve been able to wear a fancy dress and hit a mark and say lines, and I didn’t want it to feel like that,” Meester explained to Bustle. “I wanted it to feel intimate and private.”

They sure have. In addition to appearing together in The Oranges before they were a couple, they starred in the movies Life Partners (2014) and River Wild (2023). Brody also booked guest roles on Meester’s short-lived comedy Single Parents and her current series, Good Cop/Bad Cop. She’s next set to pop in for a four-episode arc on his Netflix hit Nobody Wants This.

In an episode of Armchair Expert, Brody told hosts Dax Shephard and Monica Padman that, professionally, “Everything is run through each other. We are each other’s managers, and we also have the same two agents... We are in each other’s s--t in that way.”

He went on to praise his wife as a “poet.”

“She has a depth and a read on material that is always illuminating and has a great radar,” he said. “And so she can still get at the heart of something, a script, no problem, but it’s for me to look at the cover letter and go, ‘You’re doing this or not.’”

How many kids do Adam Brody and Leighton Meester have?

Brody and Meester are parents to two children: daughter Arlo Day Brody, born in August 2015, and a son, born in 2020, whose name they have chosen to keep private.

Speaking with Bustle, Meester opened up about passing on projects in order to be with her children. “I don’t like being away from them. I’m sure a lot of people feel this way, but I’m especially not into it,” she said. “Obviously, for the very right thing, I would probably just be like, ‘Let’s figure it out.’ I mean, I’m not going to leave my family for a year. We’re not doing that. But apart from that, we have a good system in place, where I can consider jobs carefully.”

Brody has similarly prioritized spending time with his children. Describing this period of his life as his “best life era” in an interview with Stylist, he said, “I have a beautiful, dreamy family life. I have a good work-life balance and get to spend a lot of time with my kids. I’m in that really great period of middle age where I’m old enough to have seniority and work security but also still have enough of my body to be active and do all the things I want to. I’m a lucky guy.”

Did Adam Brody and Leighton Meester lose their house in the LA Fires?
