Rinzel Hype, Beat the Blues, Knight’s Staying, Overreactions, and Other Blackhawks Bullets

The Blackhawks prospects took the ice in Minnesota to face the prospects of the St. Louis Blues. Wearing the “C” on his chest for Chicago: defenseman Sam Rinzel. With his name popping up in Calder Trophy darkhorse pieces, the likelihood that he’s skating significant minutes early and often in the NHL this year and the trajectory of his development over the past two years moving him from “draft lottery ticket” into “budding star” in the eyes (and emotions) of many fans, Rinzel is hot right now.

With all due respect to Frank Nazar, who came into the NHL and had a nice early showing and got fans excited quickly… right now, Rinzel is probably the most hyped a Blackhawks player/prospect has been since Connor Bedard‘s rookie year. And the local and national media looking into the Blackhawks stories are starting to see him as one of the bright spots to discuss early in the season.

I’ve said this a thousand times already and will add a zero at the end of that number between now and the end of the regular season: Rinzel is young. So are Artyom Levshunov, Ethan Del Mastro, Kevin Korchinki and Nolan Allan. The Blackhawks’ blue line is going to be ridiculously young this year. There will be mistakes. There will be learning moments. We need to have patience. But it’s also okay to be excited about the potential of these young guys.

Here are a couple good reads on Rinzel from this week, starting with Ben Pope:

Sam Rinzel has spent years filling out his lanky 6-4 frame, building up weight and muscle. This summer, he took his biggest step forward yet."I didn’t think he would put another level of strength on like this, but he did."New Blackhawks story: t.co/aBH2EUmNNF

    So did Mark Lazerus:

The expectations we've all heaped on Blackhawks defenseman Sam Rinzel after nine measly games are, frankly, unreasonable and even unfair. Not that he minds, mind you."You welcome it."My column: t.co/M4L2DVHAi4

    — Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) September 13, 2025 Rinzel looked really good last night, but he wasn’t alone. I shared some thoughts after the Blackhawks prospects’ overtime win against the Blues.

West was in the stands watching his future hockey teammates beat the Blues a few miles from where his high school football season has started strong.

    — Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) September 13, 2025 Reminder: the Blackhawks are back on the ice for a 3 PM puck drop this afternoon. This may come across as harsh, but I won’t make any bold statements or predictions based on anything I see in a captain’s skate. If you want to take a quick glimpse of a line rush against no defense and think that player is going to blow up this season, fantastic. Go for it. My hope is that educated fans know better. Captain’s skates are nothing more than an open gym for teammates and their still-unsigned friends. No lights on. No formal structure with their NHL coaches. Just playing for the sake of getting back in the swing. Even preseason games have only modest value for me because the lineups are usually not 100 percent NHL players — and the hitting/defense aren’t full tilt. Seeing the guys back on the ice is awesome. But making a big deal out of a move in a captain’s skate isn’t it. Sorry. I really like the extension the Blackhawks gave Spencer Knight on Saturday. It’s a smart bridge deal that gives Knight a raise, tells him he’s their No. 1 goaltender of the future — but the term says “still gotta earn it.” GMKD is really doing a nice job handling his business with his internal free agents thus far.
