"Slugging" could mean a lot of different things—boxing, drinking something quickly, rotting on the couch all day, but in the context of beauty trends, it basically means putting petroleum jelly on your face before bed. This thick layer of jelly on your face makes you look vaguely slug-like, so apparently that is the basis for the social media term, "slugging."With all of the sophisticated skincare formulas out there, it feels a bit counter-intuitive to slather on a bunch of petroleum jelly on top of your other products, but maybe it's not that weird after all?In dermatology terms, petroleum jelly is an occlusive that forms a barrier to prevent moisture loss. Protecting the skin's moisture is essential, especially for mature skin. The occlusives most often mentioned in skin slugging tutorials on social media are Vaseline and Aquaphor, but these products aren't exactly the same.Vaseline is pure petroleum jelly, whereas Aquaphor has other ingredients, including mineral oil, lanolin alcohol, glycerin, panthenol and bisabolol. Some people may be allergic to lanolin alcohol and panthenol, according to Medical News Today. So if you have sensitive skin, Vaseline is probably your best bet while experimenting with skin slugging. To find out more about skin slugging, including who should try it, how to do it and what the downsides are, we spoke to New York City dermatologist Angela Lamb, M.D.Related: What Is the Skin Barrier and How Does It Change Over 50?
Skin slugging refers to sealing in your skincare products with an occlusive layer in order to lock in ingredients and prevent moisture loss. Typically, skin slugging is done before bed (since a layer of Vaseline on your face is likely to get in the way of your daily activities). It is a wonderful way to protect your skin barrier, particularly during harsh weather, Dr. Lamb tells Parade.
Is Skin Slugging Safe for Mature Skin?
In general, skin slugging is safe for mature skin, Dr. Lamb says, explaining, "Slugging is totally fine as long as you do not use something underneath the occlusive that will give you an allergic reaction, like something highly fragranced or something that will clog your pores."However, she says to avoid slugging over active ingredients like acids or retinol and retinoids since the occlusive effectively traps these ingredients, potentially making them stronger and irritating to the skin.
Also, Dr. Lamb advises women with adult acne stay away from skin slugging. "If your skin is acne prone, occlusive moisturizer can clog pores. [But] if you have dry skin, it is a perfectly safe option," she says. Stop skin slugging if you get an allergic reaction or clogged pores, she shares.

Is Vaseline Good for the Skin?
Vaseline can be good for certain skin types, Dr. Lamb says, because "it prevents water loss from the skin surface, particularly during cold weather."
But again if you use Vaseline or another thick occlusive, "be careful if your skin is prone to acne."
