CORNELIUS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A local police department and community is mourning after an officer was tragically killed while on a bike ride with his wife.
Cornelius Police Department Officer Gabriel Stainback and his wife were on a bike ride Saturday afternoon in Concord when they were hit by a vehicle.
Police say he was newly married. "Our deepest condolences are with his family and our entire CPD family. Please keep them in your thoughts during this unimaginable tragedy," CPD wrote on Facebook.
Stainback was sworn into CPD in December of 20224 after being hired as a cadet and going through the BLET program.
Since posting the tragic news on social media, the police department has received hundreds of comments from people showing their love and support for Officer Stainback.
One person said, "Gabe was always the nicest guy in every room he walked into." Another person, who said they were a fellow cadet of Stainback, said "He had so much knowledge, was great at every practical we done, and a PT stud!"
Police did not say if Officer Stainback's wife was injured at all in the crash. Queen City News reached out to the CPD on whether the person who hit them stayed at the scene and if they will be charged.
