Arizona State TE Chamon Metayer has breakout receiving game vs. Texas State

TEMPE — Chamon Metayer was a central part of the Arizona State receiving game for the first time this season on Saturday after he was an all-conference tight end in 2024.

He took a screen pass 27 yards for a score to give ASU a 27-3 lead in the third quarter, his sixth catch of the night. It put him at 60 yards for the game with nearly a half still to go.

Metayer was targeted three times in quarterback Sam Leavitt’s first seven pass attempts after coaches had emphasized getting him more involved earlier in the week.

It followed a stellar blocking performance at Mississippi State in which he did not have a catch. His only catch on the season entering Saturday was a 20-yard gain against Northern Arizona in the season opener.

“I mean he had a fantastic game,” offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo said on Wednesday. “There’s not a bunch of stat lines for blocks and and double teams and wins at the line of scrimmage unfortunately that the media or people can see, but he had his best game to date probably.

“I have no doubt that he’s going to be a continued piece of our offense both in run and pass.”

Metayer was second in receiving touchdowns and fourth in yards last season.

The tight end’s involvement was part of a concerted effort to get more receivers than Jordyn Tyson involved — although he still was getting his with 105 yards and a score on six catches by the middle of the third — and it extended to others at his position as well.

Kentucky transfer tight end Khamari Anderson made his first catch in an ASU uniform and later had a chance at a big red-zone grab.

Arizona State keeps the 2nd-half scoring coming

After Texas State answered, Raleek Brown took a carry 75 yards untouched to the house to give ASU a 34-9 advantage late in the third. It was ASU’s longest run since the 2016 Kalen Ballage game, according to Sun Devil Athletics.

It also gave Brown his second straight 100-yard rushing game after totaling 110 yards at Mississippi State.
