MENDON, N.Y. — Walkers and runners were out at Mendon Ponds Park Saturday morning to raise money and awareness for colon cancer.
The initiative was started by the nonprofit Strollin’ for Colon, that works to honor the founder’s late sister, Toni, who battled colon cancer. The organization aims to make the community more aware of the disease and help fund research and education for our community.
Doug Stark, chair of the board for Strollin’ for Colon says the nonprofit wants to emphasize the importance of getting screened.
“It’s really unfortunate, almost all of us have had some connection in some way with colon cancer,” Doug said.
The participants ranged from survivors, supporters, and even those actively fighting colon cancer.
Tina Cattone, Toni’s sister, says she knows Toni was looking down on everyone out at the race. This is the 14th year the nonprofit organized the fundraiser.
“Toni came to the first one. And she told us that, you know, even though she couldn’t be helped, that we needed to help people and make sure that people got screened. And she would feel absolutely amazing to know that all these people were here,” Tina shared.
