San Diego International Film Festival announced its 2025 lineup, including Luca Guadagnino’s “After the Hunt”, Chloe Zhao’s “Hamnet” and Hikari’s “Rental Family.”
The full Festival lineup includes 108 films in the Gala, Narrative, Documentary, Spotlight, and Short Selections categories. This year’s slate will showcase films from 29 countries and 24 world premieres chosen from 3,500 submissions, a new record for the film festival.
“After the Hunt” is a psychological drama originally released at the Venice Film Festival, starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield. Roberts plays a college professor who finds herself at a personal and professional crossroads when a star pupil levels an accusation against one of her colleagues, and a dark secret from her own past threatens to come to light.
“Hamnet, “inspired by Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, respectively. The couple celebrate the birth of their son, Hamnet but tragedy strikes and Hamnet dies at a young age, inspiring Shakespeare to write “Hamlet.”
Hikari’s “Rental Family,” stars Brendan Fraser as an American actor who lands an unusual job at a Japanese agency playing stand-in roles for strangers. However, as he gets deeper into his roles, he blends the lines between what is real and what’s a performance.
This will be the 24th annual San Diego International Film Festival, featuring diverse voices, perspectives and films that spark empathy and conversation, according to Tonya Mantooth, the CEO and Artistic Director of the San Diego International Film Festival.
“The San Diego International Film Festival is more than just a film festival — it’s a cultural experience,” said Mantooth. “From international cinema that sparks global dialogue to local stories that reflect the heart of our community, the Festival is pleased to present the best in cinematic storytelling, creativity, and human connection in our beautiful San Diego.”
The Opening Night film premiere and party will be held at The Lot, La Jolla on Wednesday, Oct. 15. The Night of the Stars Tribute red carpet event will take place at The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla on Thursday, Oct. 16.
On Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Culinary Cinema, the San Diego International Film Festival will also present the Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in cinema with the support of the Peck family. Past honorees include Laurence Fishburne, Annette Bening, Adrien Brody and more.
