Jose Mourinho’s style of play cost him his job at Fenerbahce, the club’s president has explained.
It has also been revealed that there were doubts over the Portuguese as early as last season.
Mourinho was sacked by Fenerbahce in August after 14 months in charge of the Turkish giants.
His departure was confirmed following the club’s Champions League exit.
Fenerbahce were narrowly beaten on aggregate by Benfica in the play-off round.
However, president Ali Koc has explained that their failure to reach the league phase did not contribute to the decision to sack Mourinho.
Instead, it was the lack of attacking football and the performances at the start of the campaign which sealed the three-time Premier League winner’s fate.
Koc discussed the managerial change on Friday, via Record: “It was very difficult to separate from José Mourinho.
“It wasn’t the financial burden or the press, but the emotional aspect that disturbed me the most.
“He was part of my family, our relationship was very good. It wasn’t just football, it was a family relationship. That aspect disturbed me.”
Why was Mourinho sacked?
He continued: “Attacking football wasn’t present last season. We discussed these issues, and I thought we were in agreement.
“When this season started, the performance we saw in the first five official games mirrored last season’s.
Koc puts Mourinho’s exit down to his style of play and lack of attacking footballGetty“Anyone could be eliminated by Benfica, but the way we played bothered me. That’s why it was such a risky and difficult decision.
“Since we couldn’t see much light at the end of the tunnel regarding the championship, we had to make this difficult decision.”
Despite parting company with Mourinho, Koc has hailed his former manager for his approach to the role.
He added: “There were no complaints about his work ethic. He was a workaholic. There are no hard feelings on my part.”
Mourinho had been appointed by Fenerbahce last summer before finishing second behind Galatasaray in his only full season.
Across his tenure, he won 37 out of 62 matches and was unbeaten in the league this term prior to his sacking.
