This is the final weekend before training camps open around the NHL. Hockey is almost all the way back; there are prospects showcases going on all over the continent and veterans are starting to report to their respective home cities for captains skates to get to work.
There are still some players who need contract extensions that kick in next year who are stealing most of the headlines, but there are a few young guys who still need to sign contracts to be able to play this year. On the other end of the age spectrum, one of the best ever is going to take a victory lap where it all started. And some names are bubbling for trade season already.
Let’s take a quick lap around the NHL on a Saturday morning.
Unsigned RFAs
In Chicago, we’re all wondering what’s up with Wyatt Kaiser‘s contract situation. But he isn’t the only remaining restricted free agent without paper signed, and he’s far from the most notable.
Mason McTavish is still without a deal in Anaheim and Luke Hughes — whose brothers have spent the last couple weeks making headlines talking about playing together at some point — doesn’t have a contract to stay with Jack in New Jersey.
The assumption is Luke Hughes will stay in New Jersey… and what fun would it be if we can’t spend the next 10 months talking about Quinn joining Jack and Luke? McTavish is another story. The Ducks have moved on from a couple young players already, most recently sending Trevor Zegras to Philadelphia.
Flower’s Final Lap
It feels appropriate to celebrate all-time greats this weekend with Anthony Rizzo getting his flowers at Wrigley Field. And the Pittsburgh Penguins (probably — hopefully) put a smile on the face of every hockey fan on the continent Friday when they announced Marc-André Fleury has signed a PTO and will appear in preseason action.
Fleury, 40, already announced he retired at the end of this past season. He’s one of the best to ever do it. But his final games were with the Minnesota Wild. Fleury should never have been anything but a Penguin. This is great for him, Pittsburgh fans and the game.

The Mayor (John Hoven) reported Corey Perry suffered what sounds like a fairly significant injury while training with his new LA Kings teammates on Friday; he was “taken off the ice in a wheelchair.” Elliotte Friedman later added that Perry is “undergoing further evaluation, and not sure if there will be an official update before camp begins.”
This is always the fear whenever you’re playing hockey, right? It’s a physical sport. The Blackhawks lost prospect Ty Henry to a leg injury just a couple minutes into their first intrasquad scrimmage of camp. This could be a tough blow for the Kings — almost as bad as Perry being available to play for them.

— MayorsManor.com Staff (@MayorsManor) September 12, 2025Potential trade bait?
There were more conflicting reports swirling around whether or not there are issues between the Minnesota Wild and Kirill Kaprizov. What appears to be clear is that the superstar forward did indeed turn down an eight-year, $128M deal earlier this week. What’s unclear is if that means he wants a smaller term, a higher AAV or… out of Minnesota. Wild GM Bill Guerin is saying all of the right things in the media (they’re on good terms, the love the player, this isnt’ something to be concerned about, etc) but turning down a deal that would set the market for the longest term possible — a term that will no longer be possible in 12 months — is a statement. There continues to be a lot of smoke around the Flames eventually trading defenseman Rasmus Andersson. It sounds like even his teammates expect him to be moved at some point. The question is if he gets moved before the regular season begins, early in the season or just before the trade deadline. He might be the biggest trade chip already on the board right now. Keep an eye on Jason Robertson in Dallas. He’s slated to be a restricted free agent in 2026, but could be a UFA in 2027 and will need a raise from $7.75M. If he wants more money than the Stars are able and/or willing to offer him, we can add him to a list of potential star players looking for apartments in March.Odds & Ends
The Sabres reportedly have an injury of their own that could be an issue. Their starting goaltender, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, reportedly showed up to camp with something “tweaked,” which led to Buffalo signing veteran Alexandar Georgiev on Thursday. Speaking of Buffalo, this week the Sabres placed director of player development Adam Mair on leave after he was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated on Sept. 4. Of all the new head coaches in the league, Mike Sullivan moving to the New York Rangers might have the most pressure — and intrigue. After a long run in one spot, he’s taking over a team that massively underwhelmed last year and then dumped a few notable players (Chris Kreider and K’Andre Miller). Earlier this week, the five players acquitted on sexual assault charges in the Hockey Canada trial learned the NHL will allow them to sign contracts beginning in mid-October and return to playing games in the league as soon as Dec. 1. But… will anyone sign one of them? Chris Johnston at The Athletic reported this week that goaltender Carter Hart is likely to get a contract — with a team in the US (not Edmonton), and not back in Philly.
