Cardinals rookie Jordan Burch growing confident after he popped in Week 1

TEMPE — A whole lot of eyes in Week 1 were fixed on the Arizona Cardinals’ biggest pass-rushing upgrade and free-agent signing Josh Sweat.

And while Sweat paced the team with four total pressures on Sunday, it was rookie outside linebacker Jordan Burch who quietly strung together a strong debut.

Rushing the passer on 12 of his 14 snaps in Week 1, Burch landed in the top five league-wide for pass rush win rate percentage at 40%. He logged three hurries in the 20-13 win over the New Orleans Saints, according to Pro Football Focus.

Cardinals pass rusher Jordan Burch ranked fifth in pass rush win rate at 40% in Week 1, per @PFF.

Yes, it’s a small sample size but still an impressive starting point for the rookie.

“I’m just gaining more confidence each week,” Burch told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Friday. “I’m just asking the questions that I need to because I’m surrounded by people that have already done it before. So just trying to get better each week. I feel like I’m doing all right, but there’s always room to improve.

“My coaches know what works for me and then what to attack or what to keep going with,” the rookie added. “Just listening to what they want me to do and then when it’s time to switch it up or change what they want to see, I’ll do it.”

Weighing in at around 280 pounds but still having the requisite speed off the edge, Burch presents a matchup problem for opposing offensive lines.

It’s a reason why he leapfrogged former high school teammate Xavier Thomas this season in a pass-rushing rotation that includes Sweat, Baron Browning and Zaven Collins.

Burch also has the added bonus of sitting next to veteran defensive lineman Calais Campbell in meeting rooms on top of learning from his own position group and coaching staff.

“(Calais is) a lot of people’s main resource when it comes to the game plan and how to go about the game,” Burch said. “He has so much information. Any position can actually ask him a question.”

He and the rest of the Cardinals’ pass rush are going to have their work cut out for them yet again with another mobile quarterback on the docket in the Carolina Panthers’ Bryce Young.

Much like what Saints signal caller Spencer Rattler, who averaged 2.52 seconds per throw last week, Young didn’t waste much time getting the ball out.

According to NFL Pro, Young was 11th in quickest time to throw at 2.66 seconds.

If Burch and the Cardinals are going to get home this week, they’ll likely need to in a hurry.
