For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Katie Shaps of Charlottesville, Virginia, has committed to swim and study at Columbia University, beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. She trains year-round with NOVA of Virginia and attends St. Anne’s-Belfield School.
Shaps, who makes a two-hour round-trip commute to practice every day, confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam and provided the following quote:
I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the admissions process at Columbia University! Thank you to my family for all of your sacrifices, the NOVA coaches and my teammates for all of your support. I would also like to give a big thanks to Coach Diana and Coach Demerae for this amazing opportunity!! GO LIONS!

The middle distance specialist’s target meet this past high school season was the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) State Championship—the state meet for private schools in Virginia. There, she touched third in both the 200 free (1:52.37) and 500 free (4:59.59). The 500 free was particularly special, as it marked the first time she went under five minutes in the event.
Her performances represented a major leap from the year prior, when she placed seventh in the 100 fly and ninth in the 500 free.
Shaps wrapped up her short course season at the NCSA Spring Championship in mid-March, where she posted a slew of lifetime bests. Her top finish came in the 200 fly, where she went 2:01.51 for 14th overall. She also logged a 4:24.52 in the 400 IM (28th), dropped her 500 free best to 4:58.91 (34th), and swam a 2:08.66 in the 200 IM (80th).
Since joining NOVA in April 2024, Shaps has dropped over nine seconds in the 400 IM, 11 seconds in the 500 free, three seconds in the 200 free, and more than five seconds in the 200 fly.
Top SCY Times:
200 Freestyle: 1:52.37 500 Freestyle: 4:58.91 200 Butterfly: 2:01.51 400 IM: 4:24.52A Division I mid-major program in the Ivy League, Columbia is led by head coach Diana Caskey, who is entering her 34th season at the helm. The women’s team finished sixth out of eight teams at the Ivy League Championships last season.
With a year remaining before she heads to New York City, Shap’s times would already be valuable to the Lions at the conference level. This past season, her lifetime bests would have earned her spots in the ‘C’ finals of the 500 free, 400 IM, and 200 fly. She’s not too far off the 1:51.78 that was required to make the top 24 of the 200 free, while it took 2:03.15 to earn a second swim in the 200 IM.
On the team itself, Shap’s best times would have ranked her second in both the 200 fly and 400 IM, sixth in the 500 free, eighth in the 200 free, and ninth in the 200 IM. Senior Allison Martin led the way in both the 200 fly (1:59.85) and 400 IM (4:19.95), while senior Emily MacDonald (1:48.12) and junior Lindsay Orringer-Hau (4:49.27) were fastest in the 200 and 500 free.
Shaps joins Romy Kirby, Mary Bao, Maebelle Stern, Brisa Gao, Angelina Lu, and Madeline Gau in Columbia’s class of 2030.
Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].
