Al-Sharaa meets US CENTCOM Commander in Damascus

Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa met in Damascus with US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Admiral Brad Cooper and US Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack on Friday, September 12.

According to the Syrian Presidency, discussions focused on prospects for political and military cooperation to serve common interests and strengthen the foundations of security and stability in Syria and the wider region.

This marks the first visit by a CENTCOM commander to Damascus. Typically, such visits have been limited to areas under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northeastern Syria.

The presidency described the meeting as reflecting a positive atmosphere and a shared commitment to enhancing the strategic partnership and expanding communication channels between Damascus and Washington at multiple levels.

CENTCOM said on X that Cooper and Barrack thanked al-Sharaa for his support in combating the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, stressing that eliminating the group’s threat in Syria reduces the risk of attacks on US soil.

They also praised Syria’s role in supporting efforts to recover American citizens from Syria and affirmed Washington’s commitment to continuing efforts that advance US goals in the Middle East, including negotiations on integrating Syrian armed factions into the Syrian army.

Cooper’s visit to Damascus comes ahead of al-Sharaa’s planned trip to the United States to attend the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York from September 23 to 27.

Admiral Cooper is a senior US Navy officer who has risen through the ranks over more than three decades, commanding various warships and leading naval operations across multiple regions. He assumed leadership of CENTCOM in June, succeeding Michael Kurilla, after being nominated by US President Donald Trump.

    Previous Meeting with Mazloum Abdi

Cooper had previously met Mazloum Abdi, the SDF’s General Commander, during a visit to northeastern Syria on September 4, according to the SDF-affiliated Hawar News Agency.

Sources told the agency that Cooper reaffirmed the US commitment to supporting the SDF, continuing joint counterterrorism efforts, securing camps, and guarding ISIS prisons.

The discussions also touched on ongoing dialogue with Damascus. Abdi reiterated the SDF’s commitment to negotiations and to implementing the March 10 agreement, emphasizing the need for Damascus to take confidence-building steps to advance the process.

The March 10 agreement, reached between al-Sharaa and Abdi, stipulated the integration of the SDF’s civilian and military institutions into Syrian state structures.
