CUBS LINEUP — With Kyle Tucker on the Injured List and Seiya Suzuki on the bench, the Cubs have a new DH and a new group at the top of the order. Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup for the first of three games against the Rays at Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Ian Happ, LF Carson Kelly, C Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Nico Hoerner, 2B Moises Ballesteros, DH Dansby Swanson, SS Willi Castro, RF Matt Shaw, 3BWith the righty, Shane Baz, on the mound, Michael Busch is still leading off and Ian Happ is still batting second. But instead of the normal #3 hitter, Seiya Suzuki is on the bench with Carson Kelly batting third.
Suzuki is replaced at DH by Moises Ballesteros, who’ll be making his seventh start of the season over three separate cups of coffee. Outside of one big run-scoring hit, Ballesteros hasn’t quite made an impact yet. But he also hasn’t really had many opportunities. This isn’t really his year, but he should get a little run over the weekend.
With Suzuki and Tucker both out, the Cubs needed a right fielder, and that is once again Willi Castro, a player who made a whole lot of sense on paper for the Cubs at the deadline, but one who hasn’t found a way to contribute yet: 14 hits in 84 PA, only three for extra bases and just 6 RBI.
PCA is batting cleanup and Matt Shaw is at third base.
Tampa Bay Rays Lineup:
TBAPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP
For most of the season, Matthew Boyd wasn’t just the best Cubs pitcher, he was one of the best pitchers in baseball. But as the innings started to add up, the results started to fade a bit. So over his last eight starts, Boyd has just a 4.72 ERA with a 4.17 FIP.
He did, however, bounce back very nicely in his last outing against the Nationals, keeping them to just two earned runs on seven hits and no walks over 7.0 innings. Still, the Cubs need to be very careful with him right now, because if he gets any more worn down, he’s not going to be a viable game 1 or 2 starter in a playoff series. And that’s a little scary, because the same goes for Cade Horton.
My point? I couldn’t care less about the outcome of today’s game as it relates to how long Boyd stays in. The only goal should be getting his work in and getting out on a reasonable pitch count.
Tampa Bay Rays: Shane Baz, RHP
Shane Baz has tossed three really impressive starts in a row, striking out 21 batters over 17.0 IP wth just 5 earned runs and 5 walks. He’s also generated a 52.5% groundball rate over that stretch, with a minuscule 86.5 MPH average exit velocity allowed.
For the season, however, he hasn’t looked nearly as impressive: 4.94 ERA, 9.9 barrel%.
