Over 25 years ago, more than 50 million people watched the finale of Survivor's very first season. Over 13 weeks in the summer of 2000, the CBS series had captivated the masses, bringing a genre called "reality TV" into broadcast television, forever changing the medium.
And while the show has never hit those heights again from a ratings perspective, longtime Survivor fans could argue that the show has a focus on it that hasn't existed in some time. After a couple of seasons arrived on Netflix during the pandemic, many people discovered the show for the first time, some of whom even ended up eventually becoming contestants. Celebrities have come out of the woodwork to talk about their love of the show. And, perhaps representing this recent fervor, Survivor had been nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards, the most the show has received since 2013.

For this year's slate of seasons, which includes Survivor 47 and 48, the show got a nod for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, only the second time it has been nominated in the category's 20+ year history. It received its now near-annual nomination for Outstanding Cinematography For A Reality Program. Jesse Tannenbaum and company received a first-ever Emmy nom for Outstanding Casting For A Reality Program for Survivor (the team has previously been nominated for The Amazing Race). And Jeff Probst received his second nomination in a row for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, after winning four years straight from 2008 to 2011.
"It's terribly exciting," the showrunner and executive producer says when asked about his reaction to the Emmys love in an exclusive interview with Parade. "Because we had a very long drought where the show wasn't recognized at all, even with a nomination. And you do reach a point where you think, 'Okay, well, either the Emmys are just done with us, or they feel there are other shows they want to recognize.' Both of which are okay. But it was surprising to be back in the conversation."

Unfortunately, since the time Parade spoke to Probst, Survivor did end up losing out on the trophy in three categories. While the casting Emmy went to Love on the Spectrum, he and the cinematography team both got beaten out by Alan Cumming and The Traitors. But Probst will still get the opportunity to take to the stage at this Sunday's Emmys on CBS. And, having been on the air for a quarter of a century, for him, it truly is an honor just to be nominated. Especially given the recently announced accolade that Survivor is the most-watched show of all the nominated series this year.
"Of course, it feels great. Because these are your peers, so it's very different from the support you get from your fans," he says. "I mean, the fans are what keep us on the air. But when you do get peer recognition, like when our cinematographers get recognized for their work, it's very validating. And when you don't get recognized, you just have to remind yourself, 'We're still doing a good show. There's just only so many slots.' And the truth is, this genre is full of great shows. There really are some amazing shows out there. So I never take it personally if we're not nominated. But of course, I take it personally when we are."
We shall see if Survivor can still take home some gold on this year's Primetime Emmy Awards, airing on CBS Sunday, Sept. 17. Survivor 49 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 24 with a two-hour episode.
