Michael Soroka’s First Rehab Outing Went Very Well at Iowa

We’ll see what the plan is going forward for Michael Soroka, but, if the Cubs aren’t planning to stretch him all the way back out, he might be ready to go very soon.

After taking time to rest the shoulder and then ramp back up, Soroka made his rehab debut last night for the Iowa Cubs and was pretty dominant: strikeout, lineout, strikeout, homer, groundout, strikeout, fly out, groundout. He got five whiffs on his 38 pitches, sat 95 mph with the fastball, and touched 97(!).

I find it interesting that the Cubs had Soroka already up to nearly 40 pitches in his first outing, which suggests that are at least considering him for a multi-inning type role, if not some short starts. Like I said before, I’d rather the Cubs just brought him back in single-inning relief and really let him crank up the fastball and the slurvy breaking pitch. He could be quite nasty, and now is the time to find out if he could be that guy for you in the postseason.

The Cubs would counter, I’m sure, that there are still two weeks left in the regular season, and if he can be a two-or-three-inning guy, that’s all the more valuable. So, again, we’ll see what role the Cubs have in mind for him, and whether he comes back up in a few days or gets another rehab appearance. Great signs, though, for a guy who could absolutely be important to this pitching group.
