WASHINGTON – The Federal Trade Commission has issued orders to seven companies to study how their artificial intelligence chatbots are impacting the mental health of children and teens.
Those companies include the tech giants OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, xAI, and Snap. The FTC said it is seeking information about how these companies monetize user engagement, develop and approve characters, use or share personal information and more.
“Our priority is making ChatGPT helpful and safe for everyone, and we know safety matters above all else when young people are involved,” an OpenAI spokesperson told CNBC in a statement. “We recognize the FTC has open questions and concerns, and we’re committed to engaging constructively and responding to them directly.”
AI chatbots may be used to simulate human-like communication and intrapersonal relationships with users. News10NBC’s Emily Putnam covered the possible effects of AI chatbots on student mental health this Good Question.
Dr. Erin Cole, assistant professor of social work at Nazareth University, says it’s important to have conversations with children about the value of the technology but also its dangers.
“AI chatbots can very easily become replacements for face to face interaction with our youth population especially because, they’re just easier, right? You don’t have to worry about offending somebody, the chatbots are often designed to give you feedback that you’re looking for,” Cole said.
Cole is not against using AI. In fact, she’s a proponent of students using it responsibly. But, she says there needs to be guardrails in place.
