When I arrived at Fifth Third Arena on Thursday, there were more familiar faces entering the rink than just the young players who will skate in games at the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase this coming weekend. There was a captain’s skate on the second sheet, which appeared to have pretty strong attendance from the guys who are coming back this year (and at least one from the past).
The first skaters on the ice were Connor Bedard, Alex Vlasic and Connor Murphy — who were working on some specific passing plays out of corners and behind the net. They skated as long as the prospects were on the ice for their practice. Training camp doesn’t officially open until next week, but the boys are back in town!

— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 11, 2025 Wyatt Kaiser was with the rest of the Blackhawks for the captain’s skate on Wednesday morning. Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson was also in the building. I did not see them in the same room at the same time, however. And we haven’t heard about a contract bring done… yet. Also on the ice with the Blackhawks: defenseman Jarred Tinordi, who is still looking for a gig. Maybe he joins the Hawks on a PTO for the preseason? There were conflicting reports on Thursday that the Minnesota Wild have asked superstar forward Kirill Kaprizov for a list of teams to whom he would accept a trade. Cam Robinson tweeted that this speculation might be premature. But there’s at least smoke here, so…Of note, Kaprizov has a full NMC, so this would be a request for a list of teams he'd entertain a trade to.Earlier today, Eliotte Friedman discussed the possibility of another team willing to offer Kaprizov big money.Schevkenko is considered a legit source in Russia. t.co/RmETgCl0lC

There was one potentially significant injury, one scary moment that wasn’t as bad as it looked and we got a look at what might be this weekend’s Blackhawks lineup.Blackhawks Prospect Practice: Weekend Lineup, a Feisty Scrimmage, Henry Hurt, Spellacy Cut (But Okay) #blackhawks t.co/sgIU2E6F2l
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) September 11, 2025 How about a good read on Artyom Levshunov? Ben Pope at the Chicago Sun-Times wrote about some of the things he worked on over the summer in Florida in hopes of taking another big step forward in his hockey career.Artyom Levshunov and his trainer worked on refining his decision-making and lengthening his skating stride this summer. If he can show off those (and other) improvements in camp, a Blackhawks roster spot is very much available for him.Story: t.co/bhIvroxyhr
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) September 11, 2025 The Blackhawks briefly came up on Thursday’s edition of the “32 Thoughts” Podcast, and they were discussing Lukas Reichel‘s future in Chicago. Elliotte Friedman said: “I think it’s understood that the Blackhawks are willing to make the move if they find a trade partner and I think the player understands it might be time, too.” Stay tuned….32 Thoughts news & interview podcastSidney CrosbyQuinn & Jack HughesCharlie McAvoyJake OettingerLinks to your preferred platform, here: t.co/io7Mr1RceUWe return to our Monday & Friday schedule next week.Enjoy!
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) September 11, 2025 Corey Pronman continued his series re-evaluating NHL draft classes, moving back another year to 2021. As a reminder: the 2021 NHL Draft was the last draft of the Stan Bowman Era in Chicago. And, contrary to what many might want to believe, he didn’t leave the Blackhawks’ cupboard empty. The 2021 NHL Draft was very kind to the Chicago Blackhawks, and Pronman is fairly complimentary of it in his re-rankings. Here’s where he has Blackhawks prospects ranked (including new rank and initial draft slot): Tier 5: Middle-of-the-lineup player26. Colton Dach, F (62) Tier 6: Projects to play NHL games27. Nolan Allan, LHD (32) Tier 7: Has a chance to play games47. Ethan Del Mastro, LHD (105) Again: this is presented as information to consider from the perspective of one writer/analyst. It’s not gospel. And, frankly, I’m higher on Del Mastro than simply saying he “has a chance to play games.”2021 NHL re-draft: Luke Hughes, Dylan Guenther, Wyatt Johnston lead the class t.co/qowflGdKiE
— The Athletic NHL (@TheAthleticNHL) September 11, 2025 Speaking of why I present differing opinions and perspectives on things like prospects and pipelines, NHL Network released their rankings of the top prospect pools in the league on Thursday. Guess who’s Number One! I know there will be folks in the comments who dismiss this… and others who simply don’t comment because it’s positive. But here we are, folks. Number One!The future is looking bright for these clubs. pic.twitter.com/AW6wI5V9Yr
— NHL Network (@NHLNetwork) September 11, 2025 The Los Angeles Kings announced their broadcast team on Thursday. John Kelly, recently let go by the St. Louis Blues, takes over as the play-by-play guy in LA. Which is great for Kings fans because he’s terrific. I also noticed Tony Granato’s name on the list as an analyst. He noted on Twitter that he’ll continue working with the Blackhawks on CHSN while adding some duties in LA to his assignments.I am excited to continue my broadcasting duties with the @NHLBlackhawks and @CHSN_Blackhawks for the upcoming season. However, on nights I am not covering the Blackhawks I am honored to join the @LAKings on @FanDuelSN_West for a few games.
