Former Indian coach Sanjay Bangar has shared his insights on the next generation of Indian batters and their potential to break some of cricket’s most iconic records set by the Indian icons. Bangar predicted that Shubman Gill could break Rohit Sharma’s massive ODI record in the future.
Currently, Rohit Sharma holds the world record for the highest individual ODI score with 264. The Indian opener achieved the record in November 2014 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He faced 173 balls and hit 33 fours and 9 sixes during his record-breaking knock.
Rohit’s stunning knock helped India to register a dominant 153-run victory over Sri Lanka in Kolkata. Well, Bangar feels Shubman Gill has the most chances to shatter the Hitman’s iconic record in ODI cricket, given his ability to play long and high-scoring innings.

The right-handed Indian batter has already scored a double century in ODIs, and the former Indian batting coach feels that if he gets 45–46 overs to bat, he could reach that mark easily.
Sanjay Manjrekar said in the Great Indian Cricket Show on DD Sports: “Shubman Gill. Because Shubman Gill has also made a double hundred in ODI cricket. So, he has tasted that. And if he plays 45-46 overs, then I think he can make 265 runs.”
No one will be able to break Sachin Tendulkar's record: Sanjay Bangar
Meanwhile, Sanjay Bangar believes that it is nearly impossible in this era to overtake Sachin Tendulkar’s massive overseas run tally. Tendulkar played international cricket for 24 years, scoring 8,705 runs in away Tests, 5,685 in away ODIs, and 10 in T20Is, collecting a total of 34,357 runs across formats.
The Master Blaster remains the leading run-scorer in both tests and ODIs. Modern cricketers are unlikely to enjoy such long careers. Given that the former RCB head coach feels nobody will ever be able to break Tendulkar’s monumental record.
Bangar noted, “Do you know how long Sachin Tendulkar's career was? 24 years. So, in this era, I think no one will be able to survive 24 years. That's why no one will be able to break his record.”

Sanjay Bangar predicts Abhishek Sharma to break Yuvraj Singh’s iconic T20I record
The legendary Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh currently holds the record for India’s fastest T20I fifty, and Bangar predicted that the young opener Abhishek Sharma, who is known for his aggressive batting style, will shatter his guru’s record one day.
Yuvraj Singh had smashed a 12-ball fifty against England in the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup. That innings also included the unforgettable feat of hitting six sixes in a row off Stuart Broad, cementing Yuvraj’s status as one of the most feared strikers in T20 history.
Sanjay Bangar believes that Abhishek’s power-hitting will help him to surpass this milestone in the near future. Notably, the Punjab lad has been trained by the former World Cup winner. He signed off by saying, “Abhishek Sharma. He is his student. And he hits sixes in the same way.”

Notably, Abhishek is currently playing in the ongoing Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. He is set to face Pakistan for the first time on September 14 in Dubai when India will take on the arch-rivals in the group match. They won the first game by nine wickets against the UAE on September 10.
