Prayers Pouring as ’80s Country Band Makes Difficult Decision After Cancer Surgery Setback

The Mavericks, the genre-blending ’80s country band best known for hits like "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down" and "Dance the Night Away," have announced more show cancellations as frontman Raul Malo continues to recover from cancer surgery.

The update comes less than two weeks after the band first shared that their September 4 and 6 shows in Las Vegas and Santa Fe would not move forward as Malo recovered from cancer surgery, writing at the time, "While we had hoped to resume our tour next weekend after the summer break, unfortunately we will have to cancel the upcoming performances in Las Vegas on Sept 4 & Santa Fe on Sept 6 as Raul continues to rest and recover at home from surgery earlier this month."

On Sept. 11, The Mavericks revealed that Malo’s doctors have now instructed him to remain off the road entirely, forcing the group to cancel concerts in on the East Coast in New Haven, CT, Verona, NY, and Boston, MA, that were scheduled for Sept. 11-13.

"Due to the circumstances of his current medical condition, Raul’s medical team has instructed him not to be on the road this weekend,” the band wrote on Instagram. "As a result, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to cancel this weekend’s performances… We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and deeply appreciate your continued support during this time.”

Messages of encouragement immediately poured in, including one from singer-songwriter Jason Isbell, who wrote: "We’re with you, Raul — sending love your way.” Other fans shared deeply personal stories in the comments, including one widow who bought tickets in honor of her late husband: "My recently late husband and I have been big fans of The Mavericks, which is why I got these tickets to honor him as we missed you guys the last two times you were in Calif. It will be my niece's first time seeing The Mavericks and Dwight."

    Supporters also added:

"Sending love and healing energy to you, Raul. Always in my prayers. ??❤️.”

"We’re out here rooting for you, Maestro! Thank you for all the melodies!”

One particularly heartfelt message reads, "Raul, you’ve gone above and beyond what anyone could hope for with all the concerts you play. One day, your treatments will be finished and you el be able to play as much as you desire. Your health is the most important thing, and I know all your fans are praying for you to continue to get well and the rest you need. My husband and I look forward to the day you’re back in SF. We love you and the rest of The Mavericks!! God bless you all."

    Malo’s Journey

Back in April, the 60-year-old opened up about his stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis in an interview with WBUR. "It’s been a beautiful, really remarkable kind of journey,” Malo reflected. "I went public with this as soon as we could and it’s helped me deal with it as well. It’s helped me find strength to really not fear it, but tackle it head on and continue to live your life.”

While Malo rests, fans who hold tickets for this weekend’s canceled dates will still be able to see Dwight Yoakam and opener Philip Bowen perform as scheduled.

For now, Mavericks fans continue to flood the band’s socials with messages of faith and love for Malo’s recovery.
