Authorities released a video of a suspect in the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in which the person is seen jumping off the roof of a building on the Utah university campus as they appealed to the public for help with the ongoing manhunt.
The video was released during a press conference from FBI and Utah police Thursday evening at Utah State University.
The video shows the figure of a person on the roof of a building running to the ledge, lowering himself off the side and jumping into grass below before running away.
After dropping off the building, the suspect moved across a grassy area, around the parking lot and then crosses a street before moving into the wooded area where authorities later recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle they believe was used in the attack.
Authorities said the person of interest left palm impressions, smudges and a shoe imprint when they landed in the grass, from which they are hoping to extract DNA evidence.
The FBI is offering a $100,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person who assassinated Kirk Wednesday while he was speaking at an event on the Utah university campus.
Over 7,000 tips have been reported to the FBI as of Thursday afternoon, more than any investigation since the Boston Marathon bombing, authorities said.
A spokesperson for Utah Valley University said Kirk was about 20 minutes into a presentation when shots were fired from a nearby building. Video footage purportedly of the moment the shooting took place showed Kirk discussing mass shootings with an audience member just as a single gunshot was fired.
The event did not have metal detectors and security officials did not utilize drones before, during or after the event, a university spokesperson told NBC Chicago. Plus, no “credible threats” were found by Charlie Kirk’s security detail and campus police in an analysis ahead of the event.
The person of interest is described by authorities as appearing to be of “college age,” officials said, noting the shooter fled into a nearby neighborhood.
The FBI also released six photos of a person of interest in connection with the shooting as investigators appealed to the public for information. The photos show a person wearing a hat, sunglasses and a long-sleeve black shirt.
The FBI said the shirt the person is wearing appears to have an eagle on it and the hat appears to have a triangle on it. The suspect is also believed to have been wearing Converse sneakers.
“Through the public, the tips that have been coming in are giving us our next leads and enabling us to continue to further this investigation,” authorities said at the press conference Thursday evening.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox addressed the “tremendous amount of disinformation” online regarding the investigation during the Thursday evening press conference.
“I would encourage you to ignore those, to turn off those streams, and to spend a little more time with our familes,” Cox said.
Two persons of interest were interrogated and released by the FBI Wednesday.
Kirk, 31, was born in the northwest suburb of Arlington Heights and grew up in nearby Prospect Heights. He graduated from Wheeling High School and briefly attended Harper College before moving on to focus on the conservative activist group that spearheaded his politically influential career.
The FBI is asking the public to submit any videos or photos that may be useful to the investigation to their digital media tipline.
