Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Ben Cotroneo from Sydney, NSW, Australia, has announced his verbal commitment to the application process* at Princeton University. Currently a senior at The Scots College, he will graduate in November and suit up for the Tigers in the fall of 2026.

Cotroneo trains with Kincoppal Rose Bay Aquatics and specializes in sprint freestyle. He competed for Australia at World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships 2025 last month in Romania. He was one of the rising stars for the Junior Dolphins, placing 6th in the 100 free with a massive PB of 49.24. He also led off the mixed 400 free relay (49.73) that finished in 8th place and the boys’ 400 free relay (50.00) that finished 9th.

Cotroneo told SwimSwam that his parents “put me into swimming lessons after I got wrestled in the pool by a bigger boy and nearly drowned. Since then, I have been swimming at the same club all the way to now.”

At age 15, Cotroneo spent 6 months in Glengarry, his school’s six-month residential experience in Kangaroo Valley, in the Aussie outback. “I lived in a dorm of twenty boys and we had no phones and our only communication to our parents was through letters. We went on hikes every weekend where we’d cook our own food, sleep in tents, and make fires. It taught me the values of how to grow into a man. Coming back from Glengarry was a turning point in my swimming career. Cranbrook opened a 50m pool, creating direct competition for my swim club. The majority of my teammates left, leaving me and a small group of swimmers with my coach. Being one of the oldest, I had to take leadership; I performed well at nationals and made my first final. Since then, I’ve finaled at nationals every year and came 2nd this year in the 100m freestyle, qualifying for the Australian Junior Team.”

    Best LCM times:

    50m free – 23.09 (19.96) 100m free – 49.24 (42.66) 200m free – 1:51.98 (1:37.06)

Cotroneo will join #13 Yury Kuzmenko and “Best of the Rest” recruits Isaiah Tucker, Michael Geh, and Peter Vu in the Tigers’ class of 2030. His converted times would have scored in the ‘A’ final of the 100 free and the ‘C’ finals of the 50/200 free at the 2025 Ivy League Men’s Championships.

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
