PACIFIC BEACH – The 45th annual Pacific Beach Town Council-sponsored Police And Emergency Services Appreciation Night honoring San Diego lifeguards will be Sept. 24 from 4-6:30 p.m. at De Anza Cove in Mission Bay Park.
A PB tradition, fondly known as PAESAN, is a community dinner and awards ceremony honoring a rotating group of first responders. Those include police officers, firefighters, lifeguards and city park rangers. Typically, the town council purchases items needed, but not funded, in the current city budget.
Denise Friedman, who organizes PAESAN every year, noted that lifeguards have a laundry list of needs being addressed at 2025’s fundraiser. “We did the police last year,” she noted, adding this year’s wish list from lifeguards was “the biggest list I’ve ever received from any of the first responders.”
Friedman noted fundraising has been especially successful this year thanks to a matching donation from the Ocean Park Inn and generous support from other businesses, including Firehouse PB, the OMG Hospitality Group, the Surfer Beach Hotel and Belmont Park.
Those fundraising efforts have netted just under $30,000, leaving $70,000 to go before the end of September to meet the goal of providing a new tower and emergency vehicles to the lifeguards.
The main item this year is a new permanent, custom-built lifeguard stand for Crown Point that costs around $35,000. If it is added, there will be a seasonal tower at every station on Mission Bay.
“We would like to encourage people to continue to share whatever they can – every dollar counts,” said Friedman adding, of the matching funds program, “This is the third year we’ve done it.”
Last year, the event raised $14,000.
Friedman added two other lifeguard wish list items that are transportation-related. They are an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and a Utility Task Vehicle (UTV) at a combined $32,000.
The third item on this year’s lifeguard’s wish list is for beach safety – 50 riptide signs at $537.60 each, totaling $26,800.
The riptide signage is approximately 46 inches by 36 inches. Friedman added they will be printed, laminated and mounted on aluminum-clad material with Z-clips.
“The Lifeguard Division currently has two of them (Mission Beach and South Mission Beach),” she said. “The goal is to have a sign for every main lifeguard station and every seasonal lifeguard station.”
Some items to support on-duty lifeguards will be funded too. Blenders, small appliances, and kitchenware will cost $4,400. The appliances for all 10 lifeguard towers have been funded and purchased.
In edition, there is underwriting for the opening Lifeguard Division Season Breakfast, for over 300 people, at $1,800.
