Rochester Fringe Festival (through Sept. 20)
Rochester is once again full of acts from world-class performers in dance, theater, music, comedy, filmmaking, visual arts, acrobatics, magic, and more.
The 14th annual Rochester Fringe Festival is taking place every day through Saturday, Sept. 20. It features 650 shows at more than 30 venues across the city, including the return of a free, outdoor headliner at Parcel 5. You can see the complete list of shows and get tickets here. Cirque du Fringe: Claws Out: The world premiere of “Cirque du Fringe: Claws Out!” is at the Spiegeltent for 11 of the 12 days of the festival. Socialite and opera singer Kitty Ross invites you to be her guests of honor for an evening of acrobatics, swashbuckling swordsman, and comedy. It features Las Vegas legends Matt and Heidi Morgan. You can get tickets and see show times here. Chelsea Handler at Kodak Hall: TV show host Chelsea Handler is this year’s comedy headliner at the festival. Handler hosted E!’s “Chelsea Lately” for seven years. She also launched her own documentary series, “Chelsea Does,” her own talk show, “Chelsea,” on Netflix in 2016, and has published seven New York Times best-selling books, her most recent being “I’ll Have What She’s Having.” Handler will take the stage at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. You can get tickets here. A Rockin’ City Circus: A rock and roll-themed circus with acrobatics and live music is coming to the Fringe Festival. A Rockin’ City Circus will perform at the Roc City Circus venue on University Avenue. The shows take place on Friday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. News10NBC got a behind-the-scenes look at the elements of the circus, including the flying trapeze and juggling. You can get tickets here. Free screening of “Wicked”: The Spiegelgarden is hosting a free outdoor screening of the 2024 musical film “Wicked.” It gets underway at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12. AI Theatre Experiment: Can you tell the difference between human writing and AI? Join a theatre experiment that puts you to the test. Two of the plays are written by humans and one by ChatGPT. The free show is happening at the School of the Arts. It starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13.Flower City Comic Con (Friday through Sunday)
People will be dressed up as their favorite movie and comic book characters this weekend at the Total Sports Experience on Elmgrove Road in Gates. Flower City Comic Con is returning.
Comic Con will feature guests, including DB Woodside from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Guy Gilchrist, Jim Henson’s cartoonist. In addition, 585FighterZ Esports will host video gaming tournaments all weekend.
On Friday, there will be an anime-themed night with appearances by Kayleigh McKee (voice actress for Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake and BEASTARS) and Megan Hollingshead (voice actor for Pokemon and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Guests can also pick up a free comic book, created by local artist Ken Wheaton.
There will be a cosplay contest on Saturday and a special kids’ cosplay contest on Sunday. Comic Con runs from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. You can get tickets here.
Buffalo Bills block party (Sunday)
After an inaugural block party last year, Rochester’s East End is planning to host another. The area of East Avenue from Alexander Street to Lawrence Street will be blocked off to traffic on Sunday so Bills Mafia can cheer on its team against the Jets.
The game will be shown outside on big screens, as well as inside neighboring bars and restaurants. Along with the game, the party will have merch and music. Kickoff is at 1 p.m., but the party starts at noon.
One dollar from every ticket sold will be donated to the Pirate Toy Fund. This is a ticketed event, but attendees 12 and under get in for free. Pre-sale tickets are $5, or you can pay $12 at the door. For tickets, click here. The party will also show 4 p.m. NFL games and host an after-party.
