Lord Peter Mandelson has been sacked as Britain’s ambassador to the US.
Sir Keir Starmer asked Mandelson to be withdrawn from the role, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty told MPs.
The Prime Minister was under mounting pressure to sack his US ambassador due to his links to the convicted peadophile Jeffrey Esptein.
His departure comes just days after US lawmakers released a copy of a “birthday book” of notes given to Epstein in which Mandelson described him as his “best pal”.
The book was compiled by Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s former girlfriend, who was convicted in 2021 of helping him sexually abuse teenage girls.
Speaking to The Sun’s Harry Cole Saves The West programme on Wednesday, Mandelson previously described the words he used in his birthday message as “very embarrassing to see and read”.
He also said he regrets “very, very deeply indeed carrying on” the association with Epstein “for far longer than I should have done”.
When asked whether he had continued a business or personal relationship with Epstein after he was charged with criminal offences, he replied: “It was not a business relationship.”

He said he “never saw the wrongdoing” or “evidence of criminal activity”, adding he does not believe he is “named in the Epstein files”.
The “birthday book” also included a letter allegedly written by Donald Trump that he previously said did not exist.
On Wednesday, Keir Starmer said he had “confidence” in Lord Mandelson after the book was published.
Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 10 September, Starmer also said “due process was followed” during the appointment of Lord Mandelson to the position.
Epstein was found dead in his cell at a federal jail in Manhattan in August 2019 while he awaited trial on sex-trafficking charges.
His death was ruled a suicide.
