HENRIETTA, N.Y. – Over 100 people from Rochester’s Nepali community gathered to honor those killed in protests against the Nepalese government. The protests, led largely by Gen Z, resulted in at least 22 deaths and hundreds of injuries in Nepal’s capital city of Kathmandu on Tuesday evening. The movement arose due to claims of government corruption and censorship, including a social media ban.
“Their voices were silenced by the bullet, by the government of Nepal,” said Bijaya Khadk, a native of Nepal. “That’s one of the main reasons why we are gathered here today, to raise our voices.”
Khadk helped organize the vigil on Wednesday. He emphasized the strong connection the community feels to both Rochester and Nepal.
“We have over 15,000 Nepalese-speaking residents living in Greater Rochester area,” Khadk said. “Yes, this is our home now, but we still love, [Nepal] right? That’s our home, too.”
Gagan Timsina expressed inspiration from the actions of his peers.
“This is a testimonial of not just what has happened, what can happen,” said Timsina, a Gen Z aged man. “It shows that through bloodshed, people have stand with prowess to say we are no longer okay with the activities that are being done. And for me, especially with the fact that this has happened, it shows me proof of concept, shows me that whenever something bad happens again, because it will happen again, we have the ability to say, ‘we’ve done this before and we’re going to fight you for it.'”
Nepal’s Prime Minister has since resigned, and the social media ban has been lifted.
