Soccer begins its gauntlet of conference games today, facing 10 SEC opponents before the SEC tournament later this year.
Last season, the Crimson Tide struggled in SEC play, ending with a conference record of 2-3-5. Struggling that much and being knocked out of the SEC tournament in the second round contributed to Alabama being left out of the NCAA tournament.
Here are a few of the matchups that the Crimson Tide faces in the coming weeks.
South Carolina
The Crimson Tide opens its conference play hosting the Gamecocks on Sept. 11. Overall Alabama and South Carolina have a similar record, with the Gamecocks having an additional win. However, when you break down its wins, losses and draws, the Gamecocks lose their advantage on the road.
South Carolina’s record at home is 4-0-0 but on the road is 2-1-1.
The loud and rowdy Alabama home crowd has previously harassed visiting teams, causing team communication to break down and giving Alabama the edge.
LSU
Alabama will travel to Baton Rouge on Sept. 18 to face the Tigers. LSU has a record of 5-3-0, with a perfect home record, so the Crimson Tide may be in for a rough match.
The Tigers notched an upset, beating No. 23 Wisconsin 1-0 at Tiger Stadium. The game was a stalemate until the last 40 seconds, when LSU’s Ava Galligan bumped one into the net off her head.
Texas
On Sept. 21, the Crimson Tide will return to the Capstone to host the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns have fallen off severely since last year, going from No. 11 to unranked.
Last year, Alabama opened SEC play tying Texas 1-1, and went on to tie the next three SEC games.
This year, Texas is sitting at a sub-par record of 2-4-1, with a 1-2-0 record on the road. This should be an easy conference win for Alabama.
Oklahoma
The Sooners will travel from Norman to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 2.
This may be the biggest challenge the Crimson Tide has yet to face. The Sooners have a near perfect record of 7-0-1 so far. They will likely be ranked when Alabama faces them.
However, the stands will be packed because it will be Crimson Chaos night, and the rowdy Chaos members will not hold back. Hopefully this gives the Crimson Tide an advantage and helps them knock the Sooners down.
Auburn
The Iron Bowl of soccer returns to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 10. No matter what sport it is, anytime Alabama and Auburn go head to head, fans are in for a good show. Last year, the Iron Bowl of soccer ended in a draw. The last time Auburn beat Alabama was in 2019.
Fraternity and sorority members can earn a Greek point by showing up to the match. This is also the Power of Pink night, bringing awareness to breast cancer.
