Peter Mandelson told Jeffrey Epstein “I think the world of you” and that he was “furious about what happened” as the disgraced financier faced charges over soliciting a minor, according to leaked emails.
Reports in both The Sun and Bloomberg have published excerpts of correspondence between Lord Mandelson and Epstein as pressure mounts on the British ambassador.
Their publication comes as Lord Mandelson found himself at the centre of a fresh row over his links to the convicted paedophile, after a birthday message in which he called Epstein his “best pal” was released by US lawmakers.
Yesterday Lord Mandelson spoke of his regret at his relationship with Epstein, but also warned that further “embarrassing” correspondence between himself and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein is likely to be published.
The latest reports have prompted calls from both Conservative and Labour politicians for the ambassador to be sacked.
Here we take a look at some of the key revelations.
In an email from June 2008, the day before Epstein reported to jail, Mandelson is purported to have written: “I can still barely understand it. It just could not happen in Britain.
“You have to be incredibly resilient, fight for early release and be philosophical about it as much as you can. The whole thing has been years of torture and now you have to show the world how big a person you are, and how strong.
“Your friends stay with you and love you.”
“I think the world of you and I feel hopeless and furious about what has happened.
“Everything can be turned into an opportunity and that you will come through it and be stronger for it.
Bloomberg News says it has put the latest revelations to Lord Mandelson but has not received a response.
‘Remember the Art of War’
An email appearing to be from February 2005 shows Lord Mandelson offering strategic advice and quoting the ancient Chinese general Sun Tzu.
“Reminder. You are fighting back so you need strategy, strategy, strategy. Remember the Art of War.”
The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise which provides a guide to strategy and tactics for rulers and commanders.

As Epstein faced charges, Mandelson apparently told Epstein about a contact who he felt could help with his legal woes.
In January 2008, according to Bloomberg, Mandelson wrote to Epstein that his his contact “will really go for it on your friend now that his case is a bit more realistically salvageable.”
Epstein wrote to Mandelson about person he referred to as “Mr Big”, saying he would meet with his defence lawyer, Jay Lefkowitz.
“Lefky is the way mr big refers to him,” Epstein wrote.
According to the email published, Epstein wrote: “peter, mr. big has a meeting thursday with Lefky. I need your guy to remind him one time before the meeting.”
The emails also appear to discuss a meeting in Washington between then-US President George W Bush and then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Epstein messaged Mandelson: “your boy is meeting tomoorw with B. IF he gets a chance he could remind josh bolton.”
Josh Bolten was Bush’s chief of staff at the time. A spokesperson told Bloomberg Bolten had “no recollection of anyone ever raising Jeffrey Epstein’s case with him, nor, to his knowledge, with President Bush.”
