Professional pre-law fraternity starts chapter on campus

Kappa Alpha Pi, a co-ed professional fraternity for students interested in the fields of law and government, was established this semester on campus.  The Alpha Tau chapter of KAPi is currently recruiting for its first rush class.

Founded in 2007 at the University of Michigan, KAPi brands itself as a gender-inclusive pre-law and government professional fraternity that is “dedicated to fostering academic excellence and professional development.” KAPi currently has 62 active chapters across the country.

Dascha Cherepakhina, a senior majoring in political science and criminal justice, is the president of the Alpha Tau Chapter of KAPi. She said that establishing a chapter of KAPi at the University will give students interested in the field of law resources she wished that she had earlier in her college experience.

“KAPi is going to make a difference at Alabama because it creates a genuine and collaborative community where students are not in competition with one another for law school,” Cherepakhina said. “It is not only about professional development but also about building lasting relationships and having a network that helps students feel less alone in one of the most competitive career paths.”

As the first president of the Alpha Tau chapter of KAPi, Cherepakhina hopes to “establish strong foundations” for the fraternity.

“If by the end of this year our members can say that KAPi gave them not only opportunities for their future but also friendships, mentorship and a sense of belonging, then we will have accomplished what we set out to do,” Cherepakhina said.

Regan McGinley, a junior majoring in economics, is KAPi’s vice president of recruitment. McGinley said that one of the main things she appreciates about KAPi is the fraternity’s emphasis on professional development.

“From networking opportunities to career resources, the organization equips its members with the tools needed to excel in law school and beyond,” McGinley said.

McGinley is currently working towards executing recruitment for the first pledge class of the Alpha Tau chapter of KAPi.

“My goal is to make the recruitment process welcoming and informative while upholding the professionalism of our organization,” McGinley said. “I aim to grow a diverse, motivated membership class that will contribute to the success and longevity of Kappa Alpha Pi at the University of Alabama.”

Johnnie Reed, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering, is KAPi’s vice president of programming. He says that KAPi being on campus fills a gap in resources for pre-law students.

“While the University of Alabama has one of the nation’s best public law schools, we saw an opportunity to create a more committed, professional community for undergraduates,” Reed said.

KAPi’s recruitment week for their first rush class started Sept. 3 and continues until Sept. 11. To apply to be a member of KAPi, students must complete a fall 2025 rush application by Sept. 11. Bid day is set to take place on Sept. 19.

“A professional law and government fraternity at the University of Alabama has every reason to be at the forefront of the professional fraternity sphere,” Reed said. “I want to make KAPi a recognized name, known not only for our professional excellence, but also for being the most engaging and enjoyable professional fraternity on campus.”
