Bruce Willis Wife Initially Blamed This Iconic Role for His Dementia Struggles

Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, has been candidly sharing her experience as his caretaker amid his battle with dementia, and she recently revealed that she initially thought his iconic role in Die Hard was to blame for his health issues.

"When Bruce was shooting the first Die Hard, he shot a gun underneath a table multiple times, and they didn't have him wear any kind of ear protection," Heming Willis, 47, told Fox News in an interview published on Wednesday, September 10. "That took out a huge percentage of his hearing. And over time, for all of us as we age, our hearing starts to go a bit."

"That's what I thought was happening," she reflected of when his health issues first became apparent. "Maybe we're having this miscommunication. He is really not hearing me properly. I thought maybe that's why we weren't communicating as well as we used to, because of his hearing."

Meanwhile, in her new book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, Heming Willis noted that Willis, 70, "lost a large percentage of his hearing in one ear" when he filmed the 1988 movie. However, she said it "never posed a real problem" in the early days of their relationship.

As their relationship progressed, Heming Willis would notice him "check out" during family dinners. "I assumed his hearing loss made it easier for him to melt into his seat with his hands clasped gently on his lap," she wrote before adding that she also noticed other signs that pointed to his declining health.

"Bruce had a severe stutter as a young child," she told Fox News, stating that she "figured out how to work" with it and one of the "first signs" of his illness was that "his stutter was coming back."

Heming Willis and their family revealed Willis had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023. The condition is “an umbrella term for a group of brain diseases that mainly affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain,” according to The Mayo Clinic. “These areas of the brain are associated with personality, behavior and language.”
