Bruce Willis' wife, Emma Heming Willis, revealed how their family navigates him missing milestones amid his battle with dementia.
In her new book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, Heming Willis, 49, revealed that Willis, 70, wasn't able to attend their daughter Mabel's recent sixth grade graduation due to his illness.
"Under different circumstances, Bruce wouldn’t have missed a thing, since he loved nothing more than to root his girls on,” Heming Willis said. “In fact, I can say with confidence that his would have been the loudest ‘WOO!’ in the room.”
While Willis wasn't able to be there for Mabel, 13, in person, Heming Willis insisted he was there “in spirit.”
“So as nuts as this may sound, at these events I close my eyes and channel Bruce into the moment. I intentionally tap into his subconscious and bring him in,” she explained.

Heming Willis also opened up about how they navigate going on vacation without Willis, whom she married in 2009. She recalled a trip to Mexico with Mabel and their younger daughter, Evelyn, 11, and close family friends. Heming Willis decided to leave Willis with a care team after a friend suggested she not break his routine. The former model admitted it was a “crushing” decision, though said she believed it was what was best for him.
She explained she “worried” about Willis while they were gone, but “made sure to not amplify it more than necessary." Heming Willis added that their daughters were even able to see her “completely removed from caregiving and just being their mom.”
At another point in the book, Heming Willis acknowledged that Mabel and Evelyn will miss out on milestones with their father. “He won’t beam with pride at their graduations or dance with them or their older sisters at their weddings,” she wrote.
The Willis family revealed he had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia in 2023. The condition is “an umbrella term for a group of brain diseases that mainly affect the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain,” per The Mayo Clinic. “These areas of the brain are associated with personality, behavior and language.”
