Prolific director Rob Reinerrevealed which one of his many films means the most to him.
During an appearance on the September 10 episode of Ted Danson's podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, Reiner said he has a particular fondness for his 1986 film, Stand by Me, adapted from Stephen King's novella, The Body. Before Stand by Me, Reiner directed This Is Spinal Tap (1984) and The Sure Thing (1985).
While recording the podcast interview, Reiner explained that the coming-of-age movie, set in the late 1950s, was the first time he directed a film that was different from his famous father, actor and director Carl Reiner's projects.
“The one that means the most, I don't know if it's the best, but the one that means the most is Stand by Me. The first one was This Is Spinal Tap which was a satire," said Reiner during the podcast interview. "And my father had trafficked in satire his entire life. The second one is The Sure Thing which is essentially a romantic comedy for young people. And my father had done romantic comedies with Doris Day and James Garner and all this. So I was playing in a similar sandbox to what he was."
He then said he believed Stand by Me, which stars Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell, and Corey Feldman, "was something way way different than anything [his father] would have ever attempted."
"It was a real extension of my sensibility. It had humor in it. It had nostalgia in it and it had melancholy in it. It had all these things. And I said this is really a representation of the kinds of films I would like to make. If it's rejected then I'm in trouble. If it's accepted then there I'm getting validated. And it got accepted," said the All in the Family actor.
Rob Reiner Said He Asked to Direct 'Stand by Me'
During a 2004 interview with EMMYTVLEGENDS.ORG, Reiner said that his friends, film producers Andrew Scheinman and Martin Shafer, asked him to look over the script of Stand by Me to get more clarity about what it was about during its preliminary stages. Reiner said he was instantly attracted to the script because its "tone and sensibility was very close to [his] personality." In addition, Reiner said he identified with Gordie Lachance's (Wheaton) strong friend group and his complex relationship with his father.
Reiner also said he asked to direct the movie, which was originally going to be directed by Adrian Lyne.
"This film was like even though a rite of passage for those characters, the movie was like a rite of passage for me. Because I was making a movie that was connected to my sensibility," said the Princess Bride director.
