Bad Bunny may be known for topping music charts, but when it comes to movies, the Puerto Rican superstar has one actor who stands above the rest.
The 31-year-old rapper sat down with i-D to discuss the inspirations behind his latest album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, his current Puerto Rican residency and upcoming tour, his growing ambitions in acting and where his deep love for comedy came from.
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, admitted to i-D that his love of comedy came from his family, especially his grandpa on his dad's side and an uncle from his mom's side.
"I think I have a lot of comedy from both sides of my family. But my grandpa is the boss," he said. "I [grew up in] a huge comedy school."
Before appearing in Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered in July, his acting credits included playing criminals or action-heavy roles. But hosting Saturday Night Live in October 2023 and later appearing in Happy Gilmore 2 gave him that chance to step into the world of comedy.
"I especially love comedy. It’s my favourite thing," Bad Bunny admitted. "I always watched since I was a kid. Especially Adam Sandler movies, [he ’s] my favourite actor of all time."
The "DtMF" singer also admitted that his favorite Sandler movies are I Pronounce You Chuck & Larry (2007), Click… Big Daddy… (2006), The Waterboy (1998) and The Wedding Singer (1998).
Bad Bunny also talked about what it was like working with Sandler for Happy Gilmore 2, saying that it "was a dream come true."
"[Sandler is] so nice, funny," the rapper added. "It wasn’t work, it wasn’t a job to me."
Happy Gilmore 2 follows the titular golfer who, after losing his wife (Julie Bowen) and struggling financially, must re-enter the golf world to fund his daughter's (Sunny Sandler) ballet education. He enters the U.S. Bank Open and battles the unethical "Maxi League," which uses hip surgery to enhance golfers' power. With help from his old rival Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) and his late mentor Chubbs' son (Lavell Crawford), Happy (Adam Sandler) must save golf from the Maxi League in the championship.
Bad Bunny plays Oscar Mejías, Happy's caddie. Other celebrity cameos in the film included SNL'sMarcello Hernandez, NFL tight end Travis Kelce, Eminem, Post Malone, Rob Schneider, Margaret Qualley, social media personalities Alix Earle and Sean Evans, and golf players Nelly Korda and Scottie Scheffler.
Currently, Bad Bunny is performing in his concert residency at San Juan's Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot until mid-September. He will then embark on his Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour later this year and into 2026.
