Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell has thrown down the gauntlet going into Week 2.
“Ben’s my friend. He’s always going to be my friend. But nothing about that’s going to change,” Campbell said when talking about squaring off against former offensive coordinator (and current Chicago Bears coach) Ben Johnson, according to The Detroit News. “We’re going in, getting ready to play Chicago. We’re going to win this game. We have to.”
Oh, my! Declaring a must-win game in Week 2 is pretty wild. But this isn’t unsurprising coming from Dan Campbell. The Lions’ head coach is a master motivator, so it comes as no surprise that he sounds like he needs a win in the worst way. Detroit is 0-1 after losing to the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. The offense didn’t look as crisp as it did during the Johnson era, and the defense couldn’t keep the Packers from putting up a big number as Green Bay finished with 27 points. Even still … calling a Week 2 game against the Bears a gotta-have-it game made my head turn.
It sounds like Dan Campbell will pull out all the stops for a Week 2 win
For what it’s worth, I think I understand why Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell is calling this a must-win game for his team. And it has little to do with beating his former understudy who now happens to be the Chicago Bears head coach.
The CBS Sports research team notes that only 12.2 percent of NFL teams that begin the season with an 0-2 record have made the playoffs.

Mandatory Credit: David Reginek-Imagn ImagesDetroit is already behind the 8-ball after losing in Week 1, as just 25.1 percent of teams that start at 0-1 make the playoffs. Based on the data at our disposal, I suppose we could say that this is also a must-win game for the Bears. Starting 0-2 would be a 1-2 punch to the souls of Bears fans who began the year with so much hope and optimism. Then again, a Lions 0-2 start would sink the vibes of a team that has won the NFC North in back-to-back seasons and was looking to hit a three-peat in 2025.
LET’S DISCUSS BEN JOHNSON’S COSTLY COACHING MISTAKES FROM WEEK 1
Going 0-2 would damage Detroit’s plans of a cake-walk to a division title. And I bet that losing to the Bears would really sully the Lions’ mood.
I’ve long had Week 2 of the NFL season circled on my calendar. The first head-to-head matchup between Dam Campbell and Ben Johnson was always going to be a must-see game in my eyes. But reading that the Lions’ head coach feels like this is a must-win game for his team amplifies my already heightened interest. I’m stoked for this one. And it is only Wednesday.
Coming into the season, I felt that Chicago’s football team could make the playoffs if things went well. However, the way the Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings unfolded has me rethinking things. There is nothing wrong with a little early-season recalibration. But a win against the Lions would boost my spirits and knock Detroit down a peg. So while I won’t call it a must-win, it sure-as-heck would be nice to have this one in Detroit — much to the chagrin of Dan Campbell.
