“Worse, I often learned that the president’s staff was adding fuel to negative narratives that sprang up around me," the former vice president wrote. "One narrative that took a stubborn hold was that I had a 'chaotic' office and unusually high staff turnover during my first year."
“Their thinking was zero-sum: If she’s shining, he’s dimmed. None of them grasped that if I did well, he did well," Harris continued. "That given the concerns about his age, my visible success as his vice president was vital. It would serve as a testament to his judgment in choosing me and reassurance that if something happened, the country was in good hands."
She added, "My success was important for him. His team didn’t get it.”
Harris was the subject of a number of critical stories early in her time as vice president, particularly around her staffing turnover and her work addressing the root causes of migration that led to a surge at the southern border.
The excerpts published Wednesday were the first from Harris's upcoming book, "107 Days," which recounts her whirlwind 2024 presidential campaign after Biden announced that he would not seek reelection.
In another excerpt published by The Atlantic, Harris wrote that it was "recklessness" to leave it entirely up to Biden to decide whether to seek another term.
Harris announced in July that she would not run for California governor next year, leaving open the question of when or if she will seek elected office in the future.
