A call for respectful civic engagement

I want to take a moment to express my deep concern about the events that unfolded during the City Council meeting on Sept. 2. As someone who has proudly called this city home for 34 years, I have never witnessed such a level of disrespect and disruption in a public forum.

I understand that the topic at hand is deeply personal and emotional for many. Passionate dialogue is a cornerstone of democracy, and I fully support every citizen’s right to voice their opinions. However, what occurred at the meeting went far beyond passionate discourse. The interruptions, name-calling and heckling — especially toward a grieving mother sharing the story of her late son — were not only inappropriate but deeply hurtful.

Equally troubling was the blatant disrespect shown toward our mayor, including name-calling and the use of profanity. While the First Amendment protects free speech, we must ask ourselves: Is this how we want our public meetings to be seen by the community and beyond? This behavior does not reflect the values of Greeley or the respectful civic engagement we strive for.

What’s more, some of this behavior was encouraged — even by a fellow council member. Inciting a mob mentality is not protected speech — it undermines the very principles of constructive dialogue and mutual respect that our community depends on.

As one of your council members, I remain committed to listening to all voices. But I also believe that every voice deserves to be heard in an environment of dignity and respect. We must do better — for each other, and for the future of our city.

As the saying goes, “In a democracy, disagreement is not only inevitable, it’s essential.” But disagreement must be expressed with respect, not with insults, manipulation or intimidation.

Drama comes to City Council meeting

Looking for a wild night? You no longer need to go to the theater to get your entertainment but you will need to bring your own popcorn. Your local City Council meeting might just fill the bill if it’s anything like the meeting in the Greeley Council Chambers on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Cheerleaders, rowdy crowds, hockey moms and brawls in the halls were spectacularly orchestrated by a developer from Windsor who wants to overcome any opposition to the Cascadia project.

Usually, City Council meetings draw few people and seem pretty dry. It would be useful to know that the Greeley City Council has done some good work for our municipality. Recently, I had the privilege to hear a council member explain the council’s goals for Greeley and what they have done and plan to accomplish in the future. There’s a pretty impressive list. However, the citizens of Greeley won’t remember these worthy accomplishments. What will be remembered is how each member voted on Cascadia. Their reputations and their legacy will be wedded forever to this project, for better or worse, for richer or poorer.

Too much speeding on County Road 394

My husband and I live on County Road 394 in unincorporated La Salle, just west of U.S. 85.

Their is heavy truck traffic, they speed, cars constantly racing each other. People have been killed, our pets have been hit by cars or trucks.

Our neighbors’ dog got out of their yard and was hit on Friday, Sept. 5. This dog was young and an emotional support dog.

People driving drunk out of the Eagles club have been known to land on private property. I ended up one afternoon asking some guy what possessed him to drive across my yard and into our ditch. He said he was swerving to miss someone. Except that he drove 100 feet without touching his brakes.

My neighbors are out protesting today, Saturday, Sept. 6; they will be leaving their signs up.

The family that live on the west side of Ensign Drilling company, they have a signs, “slow children.” People race down 394 side by side like a racetrack. Truck drivers on a completely flat road engage their Jake brakes, not because they are loaded, because they think it is cool. Even if they were loaded, with Jakes engaged, that means they are going to fast and don’t want to burn their brakes. Insanity.

We would like your help with getting the attention of the county. We will be obtaining a petition to stop the speeding. Currently it is a 55 mph road, that is highway speeds. Why? It is a residential country road.

Thank you for any help we can get.

    Valerie James, La Salle
