LSU has lost a piece of its depth along the defensive line for this season with Sydir Mitchell no longer with the program, according to a report from On3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Texas transfer did not see any snaps on the defensive line during LSU‘s first 2 games of this season against Clemson and Louisiana Tech. While Mitchell received zero playing time on the defensive line in Weeks 1 and 2, head coach Brian Kelly played 7 other defensive linemen in the rotation at the 2 interior spots on the line.
Now, Mitchell is no longer listed on LSU’s official online football roster going into the No. 3 Tigers’ Week 3 home showdown against Florida, a primetime matchup at Tiger Stadium that kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.

— Shea Dixon (@Sheadixon) September 9, 2025The 6-foot-6, 355-pounder from New Jersey was with the Tigers throughout fall camp but now is apparently heading elsewhere yet again after transferring to LSU from Texas last December.
Mitchell is a redshirt sophomore who played in 9 games and had just 7 tackles while playing 2 seasons at Texas.
When Mitchell transferred to LSU, the Tigers’ defensive line coach was Bo Davis, the same guy who had initially signed Mitchell while he was on Texas’s staff. So, when Davis took the job at LSU, Mitchell decided to follow him to Baton Rouge.
But this past offseason, Davis took the defensive line job with the New Orleans Saints. LSU then hired longtime NFL veteran and former Tigers star Kyle Williams to coach the interior of its defensive line.
Whether Davis’s move to the NFL from LSU played a part in Mitchell’s ultimate departure from Kelly’s program is unknown. But what is known is that LSU’s defensive line room isn’t quite the same as it was during the first 2 weeks of the season.
