Grant Harrold, who once served as butler to King Charles, is offering a rare look into the private tensions within the royal family in his new book The Royal Butler.
The longtime staffer, who worked for the King from 2004 to 2011, claims Prince Harry’s actions have permanently fractured his relationship with the monarchy.
“The king doesn’t trust Harry, because of what Harry has said. He worried that he would use it to his advantage. And he has,” Harrold told Page Six on Tuesday, September 9. “They were all so close, and to see that relationship completely destroyed, I do not see them coming back from it.”
According to Harrold, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s ongoing media projects — from their Netflix series to Harry’s memoir Spare — all but guarantee they will remain on the outside of royal life. “If they reconcile, then fall out again, what’s to say there won’t be another book, Netflix series or interview about it?” he questioned.
Harrold recalls that during his years of service, Harry and his brother Prince Williamwere “inseparable,” sharing everything from pub outings to motorbike rides. But when Meghan Markle entered Harry’s life in 2016, the dynamic shifted. “As soon as Meghan came into his life, everything changed,” Harrold said. “The biggest change in Harry’s life is Meghan.”

He also shared a glimpse into the royal wedding in 2018, where the late Prince Philip provided his own blunt commentary. “When Prince Philip came out, he turned to the Queen and said, ‘Thank f**k that’s over.’ It was very funny. I think he was speaking for the majority of people, but he was the man who actually said it.”
Harrold points to Markle’s attempts to do things differently — like trying to host a private lunch instead of attending a scheduled engagement — as evidence of why she struggled to fit in. “She obviously thought she could come in and do her thing, and you can’t,” he explained.
Harry recently offered a rare and telling comment on sibling dynamics during his appearance at the 2025 WellChild Awards. While speaking with the 17-year-old award recipient, Harry asked if he had any siblings. When the teen mentioned having a younger brother, the Prince quipped, “Does he drive you mad?” The teen replied that the two got along well, prompting Harry to respond with a laugh, “You know what, siblings.” He added that sharing the same school as a brother can sometimes “make it more challenging.”
