ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The U.S. Senate has passed the “Miracle on Ice,” Congressional Gold Medal Act Tuesday.
The legislation celebrates the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey team who defeated the Soviet Union team in the semi-final game of the tournament and then won a gold medal after beating Finland at the Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Three Congressional Gold Medals will be awarded to the team, including one that will be displayed at the Lake Placid Olympic Center.
In April, Sen. Chuck Schumer met with some of the members of the “Miracle on Ice” team, including former captain Michael Anthony “Rizzo” Eruzione, and other hockey advocates to rally the necessary support to get the bill across the finish line.
“Great moments are born from great challenge, and the Congressional Gold Medal will ensure this amazing story’s legacy continues on for generations to come,” said Schumer in a press release.
