Ex-Food Network Star Criticizes Late Chef Anthony Bourdain: He Didnt Like Anybody

Paula Deen is revisiting her complicated history with Anthony Bourdain in her new documentary Canceled: The Paula Deen Story — and she didn’t hold back.

The 78-year-old former Food Network star addressed her longtime feud with the late chef in the film, which debuted on Saturday, September 6, at the Toronto International Film Festival. “God rest his soul,” Deen said of the late chef, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I felt like he didn’t like anybody. Not even himself, maybe.”

Her comments come years after Bourdain publicly criticized Deen, once telling TV Guide Magazine in 2011, “The worst, most dangerous person to America is clearly Paula Deen. She revels in unholy connections with evil corporations, and she’s proud of the fact that her food is f**king bad for you.” He also claimed her food “sucks.” In response, Deen’s son Bobby Deen defended her in the documentary, saying, “I think both are inaccurate.”

Deen fired back at Bourdain’s globe-trotting series No Reservations and Parts Unknown, mocking some of the unusual foods he sampled. “I don’t know what he was off in these foreign countries eating. Bat brains or something like that,” she quipped in the documentary according to the outlet. “I think I’ll just stick with my fried chicken.” Deen also made a similar comment back in 2011 on The Joy Behar Show.

Despite the sharp words, Deen admitted in the film that she still regrets their animosity. “He started something with me, and I’d never even met him,” she said. Bourdain died by suicide back in 2018.

The documentary also explores the fallout from Deen’s 2013 scandal, when she admitted to using a racial slur, which ultimately cost her her Food Network contract and many lucrative endorsements. Reflecting on that chapter, she shared, “When they lay me down, I do not want my tombstone to say, ‘Here lies the body of a racist.’ I want my soul back. To lose your reputation is like losing your soul.”

Director Billy Corben, who interviewed Deen extensively along with her sons, told People that she frequently described herself as “naïve,” something he called “a very fair and accurate and polite description.”
