Distance Freestyle Specialist Will Charlton Sends Commitment To Navy For Fall 2026

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Will Charlton of Charlottesville, Virginia, has committed to swim and study at the United States Naval Academy, beginning in the 2026–2027 school year. He trains year-round with Cavalier Aquatics and attends The Covenant School.

Charlton confirmed the commitment in an email to SwimSwam, and provided the following quote:

I’m very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the United States Naval Academy. I want to thank my friends and family for their constant support. A huge thank you as well to Coach Gary, Coach Conor, and the entire Cavalier Aquatics coaching staff, as well as Coach Roberts, Coach Liscinsky, and Coach Brown, for helping make this opportunity possible. GO NAVY!!

The distance freestyle specialist’s big meet of this past high school season was the VISAA State Championship in February. He swept his individual events, logging 1:38.79 in the 200 free and 4:29.26 in the 500 free, with the 200 time representing a new career best. He also led off the fifth-place 200 medley relay in 23.73 and produced 20.97 on the 200 free relay that took sixth.

Charlton went on to lower his 200 free personal best to 1:38.63 at YMCA Nationals at the end of March.

Charlton’s best time in the 500 stems from the Winter Junior Championships in December, where he touched in 4:27.82. That represented his highest placement at that meet, as he went 1:40.80 for 77th in the 200 free and 1:50.02 for 81st in the 200 back.

He’s been as quick as 15:54.13 in the mile, a time he notched at the 2024 VSI Short Course Senior Championships.

Navy is led by head coach Bill Roberts, who is entering his 23rd season at the helm of the program. The team finished second to Army West Point at the 2025 Patriot League Championships, failing to earn the conference crown for the first time since 2005.

With two years remaining before he heads to Annapolis, Charlton’s times would already be valuable to the Midshipmen at the conference level. This past season, his lifetime bests would have earned him spots in the ‘B’ finals of both the 200 and 500 freestyle, with his 500 just 1.58 seconds shy of the 2025 ‘A’ final qualifying mark. His best time in the mile would have placed him 16th last season, putting him within scoring range.

On the team itself, Charlton’s best times would have ranked him eighth in both the 200 and 1650 freestyle, and ninth in the 500 free. Everet Andrew led the team in the 200 free with a 1:35.26, while sophomore Ben Mauldin posted the top 500 free time at 4:22.61. In the mile, freshman Dean Jones set the pace with a 15:24.90.

Charlton joins Louis St. Petery, Andrew Vanas, Chase Wilkerson, Danny Lesinski, Gavin Tran, Paul Mullen, Tyler Koepp, and Jack Kulp in Navy’s class of 2030.
