University of Northern Colorado defensive lineman Ezra Ekuban was named the Big Sky Conference’s co-defensive player of the week Sept. 8, the conference announced Monday.
Ekuban was recognized for his play Saturday night in the Bears’ 21-17 last-second loss at Colorado State.
Ekuban had nine tackles with two tackles for a loss of yards, a sack, a forced fumble and a strip of the ball to set up UNC first touchdown in the first quarter.
Ekuban, listed at 6-foot-3 and 245 pounds, is a redshirt junior from Parker and Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora.
The Big Sky Conference office announced this morning that Northern Colorado defensive lineman Ezra Ekuban has been named Big Sky Co-Defensive Player of the Week following his standout performance in the Bears’ narrow 17-21 battle with Colorado State on Saturday night.

Akui had two interceptions in the Hornets’ 20-17 loss Saturday at Nevada.
The Big Sky honor is the first for Ekuban and second for UNC since 2023, which was head coach Ed Lamb’s first season with the Bears.
Defensive back Cam Chapa was named the conference’s defensive player of the week in October 2024, following the Bears’ win at Weber State. The victory was Lamb’s first with the program following an 0-11 season in 2023.
Chapa finished last year being named to the third annual FCS Football Central Freshman All-American Team. Now a sophomore safety, Chapa was selected as a preseason all-Big Sky Conference player this year. Chapa is from Aurora and Eaglecrest High School.
UNC, 1-1 this season, plays at FCS-ranked No. 20 South Dakota at noon Saturday in Vermillion, South Dakota. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
