Stephen Colbert Marks Bittersweet Late Show Milestone Amid Cancellation

It's been a whirlwind of a summer for Stephen Colbert — though he had something remarkable to celebrate this week.

Monday marked the comedian's 10th year as host of The Late Show, which was recently canceled by Paramount.

Colbert, 61, opened Monday’s episode of CBS' show alongside Julianne Moore — who plays his wife in a comedic sketch, where Colbert says he dreamed he was the host of a network late-night talk show for the past 10 years.

Then, in his opening monologue, Colbert certainly didn't hold back in addressing the forthcoming end to his program. He tied the controversial news to a joke about traditional gifts that come with every anniversary.

“First anniversary is paper, the fifth anniversary is wood... and the 10th anniversary is cancellation," he said on Monday's show. "Thank you, Paramount, for remembering!"

Throughout Monday's episode, the former Colbert Report host took time to highlight memories from his time on CBS' late-night program.

In looking back on the last couple of years, he added, “2024, something happened. Don’t want to talk about it. 2025, also don’t wanna talk about it for a related reason.”

Colbert announced the cancellation of his popular late-night show during the July 17 taping. He also posted the announcement on his Instagram account, where he claims he did not find out about the show’s cancellation until the night before the taping.

After the audience booed at the news that day, Colbert said he was “grateful” to the viewers who have joined him every night for nearly a decade.

A joint statement by CBS executives George Cheeks, Amy Reisenbach and David Stafp at the time read, "This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount."

The Late Show originally launched in 1993 with David Letterman.
