Monday-morning quarterback: UNC, Big Sky inquired about overturned TD at CSU

Despite inquiries from UNC and the Big Sky Conference, the call stands to overturn UNC football team’s potential game-winning touchdown against Colorado State on Saturday night in Fort Collins.

The Mountain West Conference late Monday afternoon said all plays are reviewed during a game. And — though an apparent touchdown by UNC receiver Carver Cheeks with eight seconds to play received a lot of attention — Mountain West officials won’t issue a statement on the play unless they see a need.

UNC and the Big Sky Conference, the Bears’ primary conference, asked for more information about the call that overturned an apparent UNC go-ahead touchdown in the final seconds of the fourth quarter at Canvas Stadium.

UNC receiver Carver Cheeks appeared to catch a 28-yard pass from Eric Gibson Jr. that would’ve given the visiting Bears a 23-21 lead with eight seconds to play.

No replay was shown at the stadium, which was filled with more than 37,000 fans — the majority of whom wore orange, a former CSU school color, to celebrate the university’s agricultural history.

The play has generated a lot of comments and reaction including on social media with a prevailing sense being Cheeks caught the ball and the catch was incorrectly overturned.

CSU coach Jay Norvell said after the game it appeared UNC had the winning touchdown with Cheeks’ play. Rams defensive back Jahari Rogers after the game said he was surprised the call was overturned.

UNC, 1-1, led most of the game, capitalizing on CSU turnovers and penalties. The Rams, who were favored before the game by more than 30 points according to Las Vegas oddsmakers, didn’t take the lead until less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter.

CSU quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi’s 13-yard touchdown run with 45 seconds remaining gave the Rams a 21-17 lead.

The UNC offense on its next drive went 47 yards in six plays to the CSU 28, capped by what appeared to be a dramatic touchdown from Gibson Jr. to Cheeks.

The touchdown call was reversed following a review of the play by the Mountain West Conference, which provided officials for the game. Colorado State is a member of the Mountain West and plays at the Football Bowl Subdivision level of college football.

UNC, in the Big Sky Conference, is a Football Championship Subdivision program. FBS schools are generally larger programs and offer more scholarships than at the FCS level.

The call was reviewed both at Canvas Stadium and by the Mountain West Collaborative Replay Command Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to Big Sky Conference associate commissioner Tyson Rodgers.

Rodgers said in an email early Monday afternoon the conference has discussed the call in question with the Mountain West Conference.

Rodgers said in an email later in the day the Big Sky received assurances from the Mountain West that the proper procedures were followed during the replay process for the game.

A statement Monday from the University of Northern Colorado Athletic Department said the university asked the Big Sky and NCAA for clarification on the replay officiating decision.

The UNC statement said its inquiry sought to understand the decision and procedures that led to the play being overturned.

“On Monday, UNC was informed by the Big Sky that the review process was followed by the Mountain West officiating crew, and the judgment call was determined to be an incomplete pass,” UNC said in its statement.

The Mountain West Conference, based in Colorado Springs, said late Monday afternoon the call was reviewed — as all plays are during a game. Mountain West assistant commissioner of strategic communications Phil Perry said the conference’s coordinator of officials looked at the overturned TD and won’t issue a statement unless there is a need.

“It was reviewed, and that was the call,” Perry said.

The UNC Athletics statement also expressed its pride in the team and head coach Ed Lamb. The Bears’ next game is against FCS-ranked No. 20 South Dakota (0-2) at noon Saturday in Vermillion, South Dakota.

UNC President Andy Feinstein also expressed support for the team in a statement, saying it was unfortunate the game was decided on a controversial call.

Feinstein and his wife, Kerry, attended the game and spent time watching at the field level including in the fourth quarter when overturned play occurred.

“I am very proud of our team,” Feinstein wrote. “They certainly showed us that we are competitive and can win big games. My wife, Kerry, and I were standing on the field, near the goal line, and saw the outcome of that play differently — like many UNC (and CSU) fans did. But in football — and most collegiate sports — referee judgement is part of the game.”

The Feinsteins asked UNC fans to look ahead and to support the players.

“Show them that we believe in their success,” Feinstein wrote, adding “Go Bears!”
