A new grocery store is expected to make it’s Illinois debut at a former CVS location in Chicago’s Jefferson Park neighborhood.
Sprouts Farmers Market, a Phoenix-based specialty grocer, is set to come 6200 W. Higgins, according to an announcement from 45 Wald Ald. Jim Gardiner. The news part of a public meeting held by Gardiner Tuesday, with Gardiner making the announcement on his Facebook page later in the evening.
“The 45th ward is committed to bringing a nationally known and respected grocer to our Jefferson Park community,” the announcement said, linking to an article naming the store as Sprouts.
A statement sent to NBC Chicago from Gardiner’s office said if Sprouts decides to move forward with the deal, the store would open in 2027.
Sprouts describes itself as “one of the largest and fastest growing specialty retailers of fresh, natural and organic food in the United States,” with dozens of locations across the west, south west and south east. The Midwest, including Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana are listed as “expansion markets” on the Sprouts website.
According to reports, the grocer plans to open 35 stores in Illinois over the next five years, with its Jefferson Park store as the first location in the state. Sprouts did not immediately return NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
A Block Club Chicago report said the site was originally slated for a Trader Joe’s, but the plans were called off following disagreement about costs relating to the purchase of the property.
The plan to bring Trader Joe’s to the former CVS, which has sat vacant since 2022, began in 2024, a report from Nadig Newspapers said.
