Instant Bears Player Grades: Time Is A Flat Circle.

The Bears choked away a very winnable game. The boos at Soldier Field after the final whistle were deserved.

Let’s hand out some instant grades.

    Offense

    QB Caleb Williams | D

After the first drive, it just never felt like he got into a rhythm. The offensive line wasn’t good, which didn’t help. It did feel like he was getting rid of the ball a little more efficiently. Brian Flores’ defense gave him issues. It wasn’t all his fault tonight; he wasn’t the whole problem, but he also wasn’t the solution. And the solution is what the Bears need him to be if they’re ever going to get where we want them to. I’m excited to see Patrick’s film breakdown later this week and unpack it a bit more.

    RB D’Andre Swift | C+

I thought he ran really hard and did some good things, but it didn’t seem like he got a ton of help up front. It also felt like, as the game went on, he lost a little patience, given the line’s struggles. A solid effort from him, though, as really the lone back tonight.

    WR DJ Moore | C

Kind of hard to give the wideouts anything more or less than a C at first glance. Moore did some good things, and his snaps in the backfield will be helpful. I hope he’s ok after that brutal hit in the fourth quarter.

    WR Rome Odunze | C

Similar sentiment to Moore. Rome was solid and made that really nice catch in the first quarter, but not a whole lot stood out after. He caught the late touchdown, which padded his stats. He was fine tonight.

    WR Olamide Zaccheaus | C

Zaccheaus has become one of Caleb Williams’ favorite targets

    TE Colston Loveland | C-

He was fine. A few receptions, and the effort was there blocking.

    TE Cole Kmet | C-

It took almost the entirety of the game for him to make his first catch, but it was a sensational one.

    Offensive Line | F-

Too many pre-snap penalties on their end. Drew Dalman was having some trouble with the Vikings’ pass rush. The run game never really got going. Once again, it looks like this line has never seen a stunt before. By far the most disappointing unit of the night, given the expectations heading into the year.

    Defense

    Defensive Line | C+

The pass rush diminished late, but part of that was from being on the field pretty much the whole second half. Odeyingbo was good. Gervon Dexter Sr. did some really good things. Montez Sweat didn’t have the biggest game on the stat sheet, but I thought for all the attention he was getting, he did some good things. Given how the fourth quarter went, no unit on defense deserves more than a C+.

    Linebackers | C+

I thought they were solid all night, especially without T.J. Edwards. Noah Sewell had a great night and was very noticeable all game in a good way.

    Secondary | C+

All things considered, given how shorthanded they were without Kyler Gordon and Jaylon Johnson, that was a really admirable showing. The pick-six was awesome. They just ran out of gas late, and it wasn’t necessarily all their fault, given that the offense couldn’t stay on the field.

    Special Teams

    K Cairo Santos | D-

The 50-yard miss and the timing of that miss are just unacceptable. It wasn’t the only reason they lost, but it was a huge one.

    P Tory Taylor | C

He was fine. He also had a punt blocked, whether or not that’s on him, he still owns some accountability.

    Coaching

    Ben Johnson | D-

I love Ben Johnson. I think he’s going to be a very good head coach here. But the Bears beat themselves tonight, and that falls on the head coach. Special teams failed. The offense took too many penalties and was pretty much non-existent in the second half. It’s not all on him, and he still needs a little time to get his roster where he wants it, but the Bears lost tonight because of mistakes they made and the inability to put the Vikings away. That falls on the head coach, and Ben Johnson will be the first to tell you that.

Also, on that late kickoff, the ball has to be kicked out of bounds. Take the penalty, give it to them at the 35, keep the two-minute warning clock stoppage, and get the ball back with a minute to play.

The positive is, this can be a growing experience for the Bears. They have talent, they’re only getting healthier. They have to use this as a learning experience and grow from it. We’ll find out what Ben Johnson and his group are all about with how they respond to this brutal, brutal loss.

    Dennis Allen | C

He called a great first three quarters and had a shorthanded unit. The defense got absolutely shredded in the fourth quarter. That’s not necessarily all his fault, as the offense just kept going three-and-out. But still, that’s gotta be better.
