Jameson Taillon, who has now successfully worked his way through a second rehab assignment, is headed back to the Chicago Cubs this week! In fact, according to Cubs manager Craig Counsell, Taillon will start the finale against the Braves on Wednesday.
That is extremely great news.
Jameson Taillon is Coming Back!
Jameson Taillon is expected to return to start Wednesday in Atlanta, Craig Counsell said.
— Maddie Lee (@maddie_m_lee) September 8, 2025In case you forgot how we got here …
After returning from a calf strain in mid-August, Jameson Taillon made two surprisingly productive starts against the Brewers and Angels: 11.0 IP, 8H, 2ER, 1BB, 7K. Unfortunately, he dealt with a little groin issue shortly thereafter, and the Cubs decided to play it safe with another IL stint + rehab assignment.
© Jonathan Hui-Imagn ImagesUnlike last time (when he made three starts at Triple-A), Taillon took the mound just one time against the Royals’ minor leaguers on September 4. The results were not good (3.2 IP, 6H, 3ER, 2HR, 1BB, 6K), but like Spring Training, that was extremely not the point.
“I felt healthy. That was the No. 1. All the pitch shapes were really good,” Taillon said via Tommy Birch (Des Moines Register). “The changeup was really good,” Taillon said. “I think we’re in a really nice place with that. The curveball was good and then I was able to use the heater in some decent spots. The whiffs were really good.”
So now Taillon joins a rotation that could certainly use an extra arm to artificially create more rest ahead of October (especially for expected playoff starters Cade Horton and Matthew Boyd, both of whom are WAY past their previous innings totals). We’ll see who Taillon comes up for on Wednesday, but there’s not much reason to speculate a couple of days out. The pitching usage between now and then could change everything.
But the good news is that when he’s at his best, and he has been at times this year, Jameson Taillon is an extremely accomplished and experienced starting pitcher. One way or another, he’s likely to play a big role for this Cubs team before the season ends.
(It’s a conversation for an entirely different time, but it is fair to wonder if he’d get one of the first three Wild Card games if it came to that … I mean, could you really bump Cade Horton, Shota Imanaga, or Matthew Boyd right now? I wouldn’t think so, but there’s no reason to get that far ahead of ourselves. Plus, in an extended postseason run, you will absolutely use at least four starting pitchers. And that’s what we’re all hoping for anyway.)
