The Soldier Field Turf is Already Under Fire

Tell me it’s the Chicago Bears home opener at Soldier Field without using those words.

I’ll start.

The turf at the long-time home of Chicago’s football team is already under fire. Hours before the team was set to kick off its Week 1 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football, ESPN’s Courtney Cronin and Vikings Radio Network producer Chris Hawkey shared tweets that — when lined up next to each other — make a lot of sense:

Several members of the field crew at Soldier Field are surveying the turf right now and placing a sand/seed mix in areas that need to be filled on the playing surface. The field was re-sodded after a stretch of five concerts at the end of August.

Soldier Field Turf Watch is Already Under Way

If you were wondering how the Soldier Field turf was going to look in Week 1, now you have your answer. And if you are a Bears fan whose expectations for the turf conditions weren’t high, just know that you were right to be skeptical. As for me, I’m disappointed. One of the things this team did well during the Matt Eberflus era was improve the playing surface. If you’ll recall, Eberflus spearheaded the efforts to upgrade the playing surface by dumping the Kentucky bluegrass the team had been playing on for years in favor of a Bermuda strain of grass.

Yes, that was a real thing that happened. No, I cannot think of anything else that Eberflus did that was worth mentioning or placing on the positive side of the ledger. Moving on…

I don’t love that there are parts of the Bears’ grass that look rough ahead of the opener. This feels like the one time of year when it *SHOULD* look good. But with five recent concerts, I can understand why it doesn’t look as good as it should — especially if it was recently re-sodded. There is also a part of me that wonders if the Chicago Park District is playing petty games with a team that is ready to leave for the suburbs. But that’s just me thinking out loud.

Kickoff is just two hours away. Here’s hoping the playing surface holds up for Week 1. The last thing any of us wants is to see a turf-related injury in the home opener on Monday Night Football at Soldier Field.
